The sale of beer and wine has begun in two West Tisbury restaurants. Last Friday marked the first night the Lambert’s Cove Inn and State Road Restaurant sold beer and wine, thanks to last-minute license approval from the state Alcoholic Beverages Control Commission.

Both restaurants received their permits late Friday afternoon, shortly before the dinner hour. Lambert’s Cove Inn co-owner Scott Jones said he was not expecting it for another two weeks.

“It was a scramble,” he said. “I don’t think anyone out front knew.”

West Tisbury voters approved allowing beer and wine sales at restaurants with 50 seats or more at the annual town election in April.

At State Road Restaurant, the news was announced with a single word written on the hanging chalkboard out front: “Cheers.”

“Everything is going great,” said Mary Kenworth, who owns the restaurant with her husband and chef Jackson Kenworth. “The transition to beer and wine has been just what we hoped for.”
