Police from around the Island were called to the town of Tisbury early Tuesday afternoon following reports of a man carrying a gun, though Tisbury police said a search yielded nothing, and it was unclear if there was ever a gun in the first place.

Tisbury police chief Dan Hanavan said members of his force, joined by police from Oak Bluffs, Edgartown, Chilmark and the state police responded to a report that someone had yelled “gun” in the area around Main street and Fairfield avenue. Buster, the police dog from Edgartown, was also brought to the scene.

Police searched the area and temporarily detained three people, Chief Hanavan said, with a fourth person not yet found. He said it was unclear if that person had a gun, and if so, if it was real.
