The Artist

This Tuesday, July 3, is your chance to see The Artist, the most-awarded French film in history, free of charge at the Vineyard Haven Library.

The film was nominated for 10 Academy Awards, winning five, including Best Picture, Best Director and Best Actor.

The movie is set in 1927 and tells the story of George Valentin, a silent film star, who is facing a changing cinematic landscape with the introduction of sound in the movies. The most startling part of the movie is that it is silent also. This is not a mere gimmick, either, but rather sets the tone and puts the audience truly in the setting, the silent movie world of the 1920s, and in the soul of the main character who refuses to adapt to this new technology.

Again, the movie is free, plus free popcorn and lemonade too.

Showtime is 7 p.m.
