Two Vineyard teams, boys’ tennis and girls’ lacrosse, clinched Eastern Athletic Conference titles this week. Both are undefeated in league play this season, and boys’ tennis has not lost at all.

Softball plays three home games this week, taking on Advanced Math and Science Charter School in a double header tomorrow (play begins at 11:30 a.m.), Randolph on Monday at 3:15 p.m., and Chatham on Wednesday at 3:15 p.m.

Boys’ lacrosse is away this week, taking on Nantucket Saturday, Bishop Stang on Tuesday, and Dennis-Yarmouth on Wednesday

The track team travels to the EAC Championship meet this weekend. Updates for softball, boys’ lacrosse and track and field will appear in next week’s Gazette.

Boys’ Tennis

On Wednesday, the boys defeated Bishop Feehan to clinch their league title and move to a perfect 13-0 record on the season. The Shamrocks proved a challenge, with four matches going to three sets, but the Vineyarders secured a 4-1 victory nonetheless.

While the singles lineup has been more or less locked in since the first match, head coach Ned Fennessy has been shifting doubles pairings to give more players varsity experience. Last Friday, juniors Ryan Sawyer and Austin Stevenson paired for the first time, going 6-0, 6-1 against visiting Bishop Stang. Freshman Jake Pertile had his varsity debut against Stang, pairing with junior Sean McAndrews for a 6-0, 6-2 win.

Over the weekend, the first-time doubles pairing of Sawyer and McAndrews made it to the finals of the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletics Association Individuals Tennis Tournament. Sawyer and McAndrews—seeded number 2—got there by winning their first two matches of the tournament, going 6-1, 7-5 against Bridgewater-Raynham and rallying from a second-set deficit to win 6-1, 4-6, 6-2 against Old Rochester.

The duo then took on Barnstable’s number one doubles team (also the number one tournament seed) in the finals on Sunday, taking the first set 6-4 after falling behind 4-3. Though Barnstable swept the next two sets 6-0, 6-0 to take the finals, Sawyer and McAndrews received several compliments from other coaches, who were particularly impressed by the way the pair volleyed together despite never having partnered before.

Junior Justice Yennie also competed in the Individuals Tournament, winning his first round match against Nauset 6-0, 6-1 before being upset in the next by Dan Chouinard of Westport 6-4, 6-2.

The team takes on Somerset today at home at 3 p.m., and hosts Dover-Sherborn Saturday at 11 a.m. On Monday, they rematch with Cape Cod Academy in Osterville.

Girls’ Tennis

Number one singles player Samantha Potter will compete in the advanced rounds of the MIAA Individuals South Section Tournament quarterfinals this weekend, after two wins last weekend in the tournament’s early rounds. Potter, a freshman, received a number 3 seed, and defeated Taunton’s Chrissy Maze in the round of 32 before taking down Coyle and Cassidy’s Savannah Cost 6-2, 6-4 to advance. Vineyard seniors Alyssa Adler and Wendy Wen also competed in the tournament, but fell in the first round.

The depth of the Vineyard girls’ squad was again on display Tuesday, as a reshuffled lineup swept visiting Chatham 5-0. Adler stepped into the number one singles spot, winning 6-0, 6-2, while fellow senior Wen went 6-0, 6-2 at second singles. In the number three spot, sophomore Katherine Donegan made her varsity debut, taking a 6-2, 6-3 victory. Juniors Julia Cooper and Annabelle Hackney went 6-4, 6-2 at first doubles, and freshmen Diamond Araujo and Charlotte Potter took a 6-4, 6-4 win.

On Monday, the team lost to visiting Barnstable for only its second loss of the season (both have come at the racquets of the Red Raiders). Potter defeated Kristen Donnolly 7-6, 10-5 for the Vineyard’s lone win of the day.

The Vineyarders, who have qualified for post season play, are now 12-2 on the season. They close out EAC play today with a home match against Somerset at 3 p.m., and play Cape Cad Academy at home on Monday at 3 p.m.

Girls’ Lacrosse

After two losses to powerhouse non-league opponents Wayland and Natick, the girls rebounded Tuesday by defeating Bishop Stang 18-13 to secure their second Eastern Athletic Conference title in a row and a berth in the post-season tournament. The girls are 5-0 in league play and 7-6 overall.

Junior Alayna Hutchinson turned in 5 goals and four assists, while junior Jennie Lindland had 3 goals and four assists. Sophomore Issy Smith had her best game of the season, notching five goals, and junior Taylor Poggi scored four times. Senior captain Madison Hughes was dominant on the center draw while also landing a goal and three assists. Goalie April Hargy had 8 saves.

Head coach Betsy Dripps noted the team’s “perfect assist plays” throughout the game.

Scores from Thursday’s game against Scituate were unavailable at press time. The Vineyarders take on Nantucket at home on Saturday at noon and travel to Bishop Feehan Sunday. Their last home game of the season is Tuesday against Falmouth at 3 p.m. The girls close out the regular season with a Wednesday away game at Nauset.

Sailing

The team traveled to Manchester-by-the-Sea on Saturday for Wild Card Weekend, sailing against Moses Brown, Portsmouth Abbey and Manchester Essex for a chance to travel to the New England Team Racing Championships. This was the first time in eight years the Vineyarders have qualified for the wild card.

The team remained competitive throughout, but did not win any of their races.

“They sailed really well, and that was the biggest thing for me, to make it competitive,” head coach Andrew Burr said. “Their record wouldn’t show it.”

The Vineyarders led off the line in their first four races, and held the lead on the upward leg of the standard digital-N course, but huge puffs of wind coming through on the downward leg gave their opponents the chance to catch up and convert the win.

“It was hard to protect the lead all the way down the leg,” coach Burr said.

In the morning races, the Vineyarders were represented by seniors Jesse Thomas and Jake Sudarsky, juniors James Ulyatt and Tyler Shapiro and freshmen Raz Sayre and Zana Van Rooyen. Thomas and fellow senior Doug Andrade continued to sail in the afternoon races, though most of the upperclassmen left in anticipation of the evening’s prom activities. The absences allowed freshmen Anna Flaherty, Eli Hansckha and Russel Shapiro to step in.

“At one point in the afternoon we had six people sailing, and five freshmen racing for the Vineyard, which is unbelievable,” said coach Burr. “To have a chance to even get to the wild card as a freshman...you just don’t see that a lot in high school sailing. It’s very rare to see even sophomores [participating in varsity].”

“You could be the fastest person in the world, but you still need to know what you’re doing on the water,” he continued.

Baseball

The Vineyarders are now 8-6 on the season, and are two wins away from securing a postseason berth, with six games yet to play.

“That’s what we’re shooting for,” said head coach Gary Simmons.

On May 7, the team defeated Chat-ham 15-0, with senior pitcher Andrew Williamson turning in a complete game. Williamson allowed just five hits, striking out eight with two walks, and made his presence known offensively as well, going 2-for-3 with three runs and two RBIs. Junior Jack Roberts went 3-for-4 with two runs and five RBIs, and senior Chris Morris was 3-for-4 with two runs and one RBI.

The Vineyarders moved to a 3-3 record in the Eastern Athletic Conference after losses to Bishop Stang May 11 and Coyle and Cassidy on Monday. The Coyle game was “closer than the score indicated,” said Simmons, with the team down by just one run going into the top of the fifth, hampered by runners left on base. Coyle, which is undefeated in the EAC, exploded for nine runs in the last innings for a 12-2 win. Seniors Ryan Fisher and Noah Stobie went 2-for-4, while Roberts was 2-4 and senior Michael Montanile 2-for-3.

Scores from Thursday’s league game against Bishop Feehan were unavailable at press time. The team finishes EAC play today with a home game against Somerset at 3:15 p.m. They take on Nantucket in Brewster on Saturday and Falmouth Tuesday in an away game before returning home for a Wednesday matchup against Chatham at 3:30 p.m.
