The Edgartown police department will welcome two new members this summer.

On Tuesday police chief Antone Bettencourt told the selectmen that with officer Alex Elias leaving for another job, Oak Bluffs police officer Jeffrey Trudel will be joining the Edgartown force on May 14. Mr. Trudel is assigned to the K-9 unit for Martha’s Vineyard Law Enforcement Council, working with his black Labrador, Buster. Aquinnah Det. Ryan Ruley will also join the Edgartown department, effective June 18. Mr. Bettencourt said both men will later be sworn in before the board.

In other business, the selectmen heard the final report from a group of Northeastern students conducting a traffic study for downtown Edgartown. The students suggested improvements including adding back-in angle parking around Memorial Park, changing Davis Lane to a “bicycle promenade,” and creating text or e-mail alerts for passengers waiting for the Chappaquiddick ferry. The selectmen thanked the five students for their suggestions and said there will be further discussion if and when the town wants to adopt any of the ideas.

The board also reorganized Tuesday, with Michael Donaroma elected chairman. He will take over for Arthur Smadbeck, who has served for the past year.
