Poetry Discussion

During the month of April, the Vineyard Haven Library will be hosting the second annual Common Threads poetry discussions.

Common Threads is a program of MassPoetry.org that seeks to have as many people as possible read and discuss the same nine poems during the month of April, which is national poetry month. Here on the Vineyard, Michael West leads the poetry discussion on three afternoons in April at the Vineyard Haven Library. Discussions are scheduled for 2 p.m. on Saturdays, April 7, April 14, and April 28.

All the poets selected have strong ties to Massachusetts. This year’s collection features nine poets who span the breadth of the Commonwealth as well as the centuries. The selections are The Author to Her Book by Anne Bradstreet, The Fire of Drift-Wood by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow, Poem 1129 by Emily Dickinson, For the Union Dead by Robert Lowell, The Hardness Scale by Joyce Peseroff, Horseface by Sam Cornish, if see no end in is by Frank Bidart, Out at Lanesville by David Ferry, and Baseball by Gail Mazur.

The nine poems and discussion questions are available at masspoetry.org/wp-content/uploads/2012/03/This-Is-It.pdf.

This year the MassPoetry website also features videos of the living poets reading their own poems as well as those poems of the non-living poets.
