Happy New Year! As I sit here writing this article, the temperature is 23 chilling degrees. After being in the 40s and 50s it was quite an awakening. But by weekend they are saying we’ll back into the 40s again. It will be interesting to see what happens this spring.

Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Hannah Rabasca and Zachary Vukota, who celebrated their day Dec. 24; Katherine Dourian, Dec. 25; Cicero Batista-Neto, Molly Pogue, Paige Pogue and Spencer Pogue, who celebrated their day Dec. 26; Emma Herrick, Dec. 27; Connor Donnelly, Alexander Walsh and Jack Walsh, who all celebrated their day Dec. 31.

Special wishes go out to Troy Cavallo, who celebrated his day Dec. 30.

Also to TJ at Edgartown Seafood who celebrated his day Dec. 31.

Happy Birthday to our New Year’s men: Glenn Searle, who I understand enjoyed his day at the Pats game with his men friends, and to Tom Sharkey.

Eddie Montession celebrated his day Jan. 3, as did Nola Mavro.

We had a quiet New Year’s Eve, but word has it that the Harbor View Hotel party was a great success. Lots of people and great music and, of course, the fireworks. We debated going down to watch them, but our pillows were calling us. We had just closed our eyes and I heard the first boom and looked out our bedroom window and could see the whole display as they rose above the school roof, so we enjoyed them in our warm house.

The MV Center for Living will continue their Cultural Luncheon series by honoring the Scottish influence and contributions on the Vineyard. Save Saturday Jan. 14 from noon to 2 p.m. at the Grill on Main in Edgartown to hear speaker Steve Ewing and bagpiper Howard Wall, while enjoying a traditional meal as well as a taste of haggis. Tickets are $25 per person, available by calling Leslie Clapp at the Center for living at 508-939-9440 or by going to the Center’s Web site, center4living.org.

Alicia Knight wrote to inform me that her third grade class, 1L and 3K raised a whopping $850.94 for the Heifer Project. As a group they have decided to buy a flock of chickens, two hives of bees and a goat. The rest of the money goes toward what’s “most needed.” We are all very grateful to the staff, parents, students and community at the school for support with the fund-raising efforts!

The Mansion House is again offering Vineyarders a “staycation” to celebrate the hotel’s 27th anniversary. All January, Vineyard residents can get a king room for $27 per person, based on double occupancy. “We look forward to the slumber party every year; it’s a great way to thank our friends and neighbors on the Island and gives Vineyarders the chance to relax after the busy holidays,” said owner Susan Goldstein, who opened the hotel with husband, Sherm Goldstein, in 1985. All guests of the Inn enjoy a full buffet breakfast each morning and use of the health club, pool and hot tub. The Spa is open for treatments and chef Benjamin deForest is serving up hearty winter fare in Zephrus. Stop by the front desk or call 508-693-2200 for more details.

Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
