A new restaurant may be coming to Main street Edgartown in the coming year.

Brothers Patrick and Ted Courtney told the Edgartown selectmen at their meeting Tuesday that they have preliminary plans to open a restaurant in the space currently occupied by In the Woods, which is closing this weekend. The Courtneys will lease the building from the Hall family beginning Jan. 1.

Patrick Courtney told the selectmen that he and his brother originally had planned to put a clothing store in the space, but are now considering a seafood restaurant.“We believe it would be a great complement to the existing mix here in town,” Mr. Courtney said. “We’ve talked to merchants on that side of [Main street] and we think it would balance out the foot traffic...and definitely aid some of the merchants who are on this side of Main street, in the evening in particular.”

The Courtney brothers won permission earlier this year from the town zoning board of appeals to open a restaurant in a space that was previously a greenhouse off South Water street in the center of town, but the plans never materialized.
