A fire that broke out in a large metal boat shed at Maciel Marine on the Lagoon Pond in Vineyard Haven Saturday afternoon was contained by Tisbury volunteer firefighters. The three-alarm call came in between 1 and 1:30 p.m. Saturday that a boat shed at the marina was fully engulfed. Mutual aid responded from Edgartown and Oak Bluffs as well the foam truck from the Martha’s Vineyard Airport.

Thick black smoke hung over the boatyard in the early minutes of the fire, and metal siding on the 80-by-100-foot building showed signs of melting from the heat of the interior blaze. As firemen prepared their equipment, the sound of muted explosions were heard from within the building.

The shed is understood to contain boats, outboard motors and other marina equipment.

Ladder trucks and pumpers surrounded the scene and traffic backed up on Beach Road and in the surrounding area as motorists were diverted away from Lagoon Pond Road area. Emergency medical technicians set up a safety station to assist firemen if needed on the road.

The fire was brought under control in under two hours, and was confined to the building.

Fire officials were still securing the scene in mid-afternoon. The Gazette will post an update including an official report from the town fire chief as it becomes available.
