Both cross-country teams and boys’ soccer continued their dominance of the Eastern Athletic Conference this week with wins over Coyle-Cassidy and Somerset (cross-country) and CC and Bishop Stang (soccer). The Island rivalry starts up this weekend with a visit from Nantucket. The Whalers will play both soccer teams and field hockey on Saturday.

Boys’ Soccer

The boys defeated Coyle-Cassidy last Thursday 3-0, and took down Bishop Stang by the same score on Tuesday.

After a scoreless first half against Bishop Stang, senior John Oliveira put up the first Vineyard goal on a penalty kick. Junior captain Jack Roberts then scored twice for the team, with his first goal coming off an Oliveira assist and the second from an assist by junior Martin Aranzabe.

Roberts leads the EAC in points, while Oliveira is tied for second place. Senior John Marcal is third in the league.

The Vineyarders are undefeated in conference (4-0-1), and have an overall record of 5-4-1.

They will play Nantucket at 1:45 p.m. tomorrow at home, and take on visiting EAC opponent Somerset at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.

Cross-Country

The team picked up two more conference wins this week, defeating Coyle-Cassidy last Wednesday before returning to the Island for a home meet against Somerset.

On the boys’ side, juniors Cooper Chapman and Michael Schroeder matched each other step for step in the final yards of the course en route to leading the team to a 15-48 win over Somerset. Chapman and Schroeder posted tying times of 17:09, a personal best for both runners.

The Vineyarders took the first five places (and nine of the top 10 places), with six runners posting sub-18:00 times for the 5K course. Junior Kyle Joba-Woodruff finished three seconds off a personal best with a third-place time of 17:27. Sophomore Jeremy Alley-Tarter ran a 17:38, while juniors Job DeForrest and Sam Oslyn turned in personal bests of 17:45 and 17:52, respectively.

The girls blew past the Warriors 18-43, taking eight of the top 10 spots. Freshman Willoe Maynard won the race with a personal best time of 20:43, picking up her first varsity victory along the way. Senior Hannah Moore took second place with a personal best time of 20:37.

Senior Shivonne Schofield finished with a time of 21:00, one second faster than freshman Julia Neville, who, along with sophomore Lucy Norris, joined the group of runners setting personal bests. Senior Maya Harcourt tied her personal best, while senior Eva Balboni turned in a season best time.

The team travels to the Brown Invitational on Saturday.

Football

The Vineyarders traveled to Pembroke last Thursday, falling 19-7 after being stifled by the Titans’ defense for the first three quarters.

Senior quarterback Delmont Araujo ran in the lone Vineyard touchdown in the fourth to make the score 13-7, but Pembroke put up one more touchdown before the game was over.

The team is 1-4 overall, but has a 1-0 record in the EAC. They will take on league opponent Somerset tomorrow; Somerset and the Vineyard are currently tied for first in conference.

Girls’ Soccer

The girls fell to league opponents Coyle-Cassidy and Bishop Stang this week, but held on for a scoreless draw against Whitinsville Christian Saturday.

Freshman goalkeeper Mariah Duarte had her first shutout of the season against Whitinsville. Coach Richard Bennett also praised the defensive play of senior Sarah Williston.

The Vineyarders take on Nantucket at home tomorrow; kickoff is at 11:30 a.m. They will next play Somerset in an away game on Tuesday.

Golf

The team defeated Whitman-Hanson in a home match on Tuesday, taking a close 261-264 win. After a spate of matches at Farm Neck, the Vineyarders travel off-Island this week to take on EAC opponent Somerset on Monday.

Field Hockey

The Vineyarders took on visiting West Bridgewater on Tuesday, falling 3-1. Junior Cat Dorr scored for the girls on an assist from senior captain Meghan McHugh.

They play Nantucket tomorrow at home at 11:30, and will be away at Bishop Stang on Tuesday.
