The weekend was wonderfully warm with 80-degree weather for three days in a row. Many of the trees are still green but the majority of them are brown from the storm in September and will not have any vibrant hues this autumn due to the saltwater mist that changed them significantly. Many of the seasonal businesses have already closed. Our last outpost to carry us through the winter will be the Menemsha Café where Josh Aronie has shortened the hours from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m., or you may always get a cup of coffee at Menemsha Texaco from 7 a.m. to 5 p.m. Then we will have to travel down to West Tisbury to 7-A Foods or Alley’s. The VTA bus schedule has changed dramatically and it is this time of year that we all miss the hourly service and of note this year the VTA had the highest ridership ever! We will look forward to spring after a few months of rest and restoration.
The Martha’s Vineyard Public Charter School is hosting a Fabulous 50s party on Saturday, Oct. 15 at Nectar’s. Tickets are $25 per person which includes pizza and salad. There will be a live auction with auctioneers Paul Karasik with his Elvis wig and Laura Sargent Hall. Perhaps you would like to bid on a trip to Florence, Italy or to St. John in the Caribbean. There are more than 150 items for the auctions including wampum jewelry by Joan LeLacheur or a week at a Quitsa Pond cottage donated by the Meegan and Nitchie families. Would salsa classes with Saskia Vanderhoop be of interest to you? The silent auction is from 6 to 8 p.m.; the live auction with Paul and Laura is at 8 p.m. The 50s sock hop with deejay Jason Araujo begins at 9 p.m. Have a fun evening.
The Aquinnah Public Library and the community would like to welcome new staff members Penny Huff and Barbara Lampson who will share the duties as assistants to library director Catherine Thompson and her associate Rosa Parker. Please stop in and enjoy the programs offered. The new books have arrived that had been purchased through the Libri Foundation award for the children’s section.
Get well wishes to James Boales who underwent orthopedic surgery on Thursday. It is anticipated that he will be up and about in a matter of days.
Duncan Caldwell will return to his winter home in Paris today, his wife Nancy having flown home a week ago. We will look forward to more historical notes next year.
Welcome to Oceana Dias, who was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Oct. 9, the daughter of Antone Dias and Jannette Vanderhoop. She is the granddaughter of Douglas Dias of Tisbury and Cheryl Vanderhoop Sellitti of North Carolina. Oceana has many aunts and uncles and cousins across the Vineyard.
Yvette Eastman entertained her many friends at a party at her home this week while observing her 99th birthday.
Congratulations to Bruce Eckman upon his appointment to the board of the Martha’s Vineyard Community Services. He and his wife, Shelley, will be returning to their winter home in the near future.
Noah James Manning returned home on Monday night after spending the weekend in New York at the home of his grandparents Bill and Joan Kistner. Noah picked apples with his cousins at an apple orchard in New Paltz, N.Y., had lunch with his family at the family restaurant Bill and Bob’s BBQ in Poughkeepsie, and of course shopped. He was accompanied by his parents, Paul and Theresa. On Tuesday, Noah presented his teachers Terri, Victoria and Barbara as well as Orla and Sue with apples before heading off to the cranberry bogs.
Welcome to Lewis Emmet Moore, who was named this week following his birth on Sept. 25 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. Lewis is the son of Alexander Moore and Heidi Vanderhoop. He is welcomed by his brother Erick Angelo Moore. Lewis is the grandson of Erick P. Vanderhoop, Patti Young and Thomas Colligan, Robert and Kim Moore, and great-grandson of Anne Vanderhoop Madison.
Sage Surner and his friend Kenneth M. Lawson will return to their off-Island homes this week after spending the past two months as guests of Gladys Widdiss as well as Donald and Carl. They spent most of their days at the beach, but in this past week had a change of pace. On Friday, they assisted Carl Widdiss with the removal of the former Gay Head Diner from the former Grieder property to Gladys’ yard where it may or may not remain; depending on future plans for the use of the building. On Monday, they assisted Carl with the removal of the airplane that did not take off properly from Dogfish Bar over the weekend. No, it was not a plane crash as had been reported. The plane had landed near the beach house of the owner but upon take off the changes in the beach sand, etc. prevented the airplane from becoming airborne. Thus, the only way to remove the plane was by flatbed truck from the beach to the airport. On Tuesday evening, Sage and Kenneth assisted with the annual Cranberry Day dinner which was moved to the Aquinnah town hall.

Neal Maciel will party on October 18 and shares the day with James Vercruysse and Darlene Pachico. Stella Hopkins and Louis Belain share the day on October 19. A very special happy 80th birthday wish to Elmore (Bud) Mayhew who will celebrate on Oct. 19. Clyde Phillips will celebrate on Oct. 20. Barbara Gentry, Chantal Booker, Paul Mendelson, Joseph Vanderhoop Lee and Nancy Campana all share the day on Oct. 21.
