We had a short fall and now summer is back. The weather has been hazy, hot and humid and it is hard to believe as the pumpkins, chrysanthemums and cabbages are all out and ready to be planted.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Ewellen Carlos, who celebrated her day Sept. 24; Curtis Fournier, Sept. 26; Ethan Creato, Brendan Donnelly, Joao Gancalves and Andres Roa Sanchez, who all celebrated their day Sept. 27; Ellie Dolby and Lucy Ulyatt, Sept. 28; and to Samantha Hargy, who celebrated her day Sept. 29.
Special birthday wishes go out Mike Donaroma, who celebrated his milestone birthday, Sept. 23, and Walter Morrison, who celebrated his day Sept. 26.
The fourth annual Domestic and Sexual Violence Awareness Walk, sponsored by Martha’s Vineyard Community Services, is scheduled for Oct. 8 this year. Registration starts at 10 a.m., the walk begins at 10:30 a.m. at the Edgartown Park & Ride lot. The ticket is $5 ahead of time and $10 on the day of the walk. Bring the whole family; water and snacks will be provided for those who enjoy the two-mile walk through beautiful, historic, downtown Edgartown. The 40th annual United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard Harvest Supper will be held on Saturday, Oct. 22 at Christ Church campus (the Stone Church in Vineyard Haven). More details will follow, or for more information call the church office at 508-693-4424.
Don’t forget if you have any old computers, printers, electrical appliances (small and large), stereos, eight-tracks, or ACs taking up space in your basement or garage, tomorrow, Oct. 1, is Electronic Disposal Day from 9 a.m. to 2 p.m. at Martha’s Vineyard Community Services on the Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road across from the high school. Round up all your old toaster ovens, hair dryers, refrigerators, tape recorders, and bring them by — all to benefit Martha’s Vineyard Community Services.
Our cousins Sonny and Cindy Laurent have traveled from Plaquemine, La., for their annual visit to Massachusetts. They arrived Tuesday for a very full week of visiting friends, fishing and enjoying the Island. Of course there will be the stops for favorite foods that they cannot enjoy in Louisiana. So for the second time this year, which is usually unheard of, Ralph and I went up-Island with them. It was a great day and we did enjoy all the favorite sights. I was amazed how much the Cliffs have changed. I have not been able to walk up there these past few years but with my new titanium knees I made it up the hill. It is still a beautiful sight and on the way down the hill we were able to spot a family of seals.
We had a great meal last Friday night. Our neighbors Jim and Mary Ellen treated us to an anniversary dinner at the Grille on Main. They have started their two-for-one meal on Friday nights and by the time we finished dinner the restaurant was full. It was very good and we look forward to going back again soon.
Town is still hopping during the lunch hours. The tour buses are still here and they drop passengers at Church street. Most of the stores are still open but most of them have the “SALE” sign in their windows.
