Pumpkin Picking

It’s fall, yes, even officially and not just in the urge to get out the duvet on these chilly nights. This means Halloween is not far away. And if it’s Halloween, it’s time to start thinking of creating a bunch of little orange demons to welcome the would-be witches and skeletons to your doorway.

We’re talking about jack-o-lanterns here.

On Saturday, Sept. 24, the Farm Institute in Katama is holding a pick-your-own-pumpkin day from 10 a.m. to 4 p.m. Pumpkins are $.90/lb for pumpkins 7 lbs. and under, and $.60/lb. over 7 lbs.

And to put you in the mood for lingering over choosing your perfect pumpkin there will be a presentation of the sustainable art installation, Sunboxes. This work is the brainchild of artist Craig Colorusso and uses the sun’s energy through solar panels, rigged with various speakers scattered about the pumpkin patch to create music. Words feel rather empty when trying to describe how, well, cool this installation is. Far better to get a sneak preview at kickstarter.com/projects/sun-boxes/sun-boxes-on-marthas-vineyard.
