This week the play 5 Mojo Secrets began its run at the Vineyard Playhouse. The play tells the story of a successful African American couple as they try to sort out what happened to their once happy marriage. It is a subject every married couple, even the happiest, can relate to. After all, how do two separate individuals retain their own identity and aspirations while also becoming that one unit known as husband and wife? It is a challenge that many decide is just too great.

But whether a marriage succeeds or fails, the questions that surface during that journey regarding love, parenting, career, social commitment and identity are always worth asking.

5 Mojo Secrets is a two-character play that makes use of poetic monologues and personal introspection to dig deeply into this emotional terrain. The characters of a successful obstetrician and his professor wife are played by Suzzanne Douglas and John Douglas Thompson. Both actors have numerous Broadway credits and Ms. Douglas has that most important Vineyard credit; she is a summer resident of Chappaquiddick.

The writer, Kathleen McGhee-Anderson, graduated cum laude from Spelman College and received her Masters of Fine Arts from Columbia University. She has written for television including Little House on The Prairie, The Cosby Show, Any Day Now, Touched by An Angel, among many others, and for film and theatre.

5 Mojo Secrets plays tonight, August 26 and tomorrow at 8 p.m. at the Vineyard Playhouse located at 24 Church street in Vineyard Haven. The play resumes on Wednesday, August 31 and runs through Sept. 3. For tickets and more information, visit vineyardplayhouse.org.
