The featured artist this week, August 18 to 24, at Dragonfly Gallery in Oak Bluffs is Jenny Nelson from Woodstock, N.Y. Ms. Nelson attended Maine College of Art in Portland, Maine and graduated with a BFA from Bard College, where she received a scholarship to the Lacoste School of the Arts in France.

In her own words, Ms. Nelson describes her work in the following way: “Most of the paintings evolve as an intuitive reaction to my surroundings, be it interior space, inner space, or landscape. To evoke this kind of sensory memory in my work I apply many layers of paint, using gesture and an internal sense of color. Traces of previous layers will remain visible, allowing colors to interact in ways I could not have anticipated . . . . The paintings are an ongoing process of addition and subtraction until everything on the canvas coexists with a depth and intensity that seems balanced to me.”

Dragonfly Gallery is located at 91 Dukes County avenue in the Oak Bluffs Arts District. Its hours are 11 a.m. to 6 p.m., seven days a week. For more information, call 508-693-8877 or visit mvdragonfly.com.
