Well, once again, welcome to New England. Just a few days ago we were complaining on how unusually cold it was and then at a blink of an eye we are talking air conditioners and wondering if the breeze is going to come up and cool things off. Oh, well, happy summer!
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Wyatt Belisle, who celebrated his day on June 5; Donald O’Shaughnessy Jr. and Cassandra Silva, June 8; Julia Marlla Lemos and Cailynn Patnaude, June 9; and to Sarah Felix and Jullyo Lima, who celebrate their day today, June 10.
Congratulations to Ann Heron and Tom Prendergast, who after a short, 25-year engagement, were united in marriage on April 6. Best wishes to you both, and here is to another 25 years of happiness!
Kevin Searle is now recuperating from surgery at the Falmouth Hospital and doing very well. He will be there until Monday, June 13, so if you would like to speak to him he is in Room 322 and you can call the hospital at 508- 457-1339. I am sure he would love to hear from his friends.
If you missed it, Ted Morgan, war hero and former selectman, was on the CBS World News Tonight on Monday evening. You can see the episode on CBS.com. It was a great story and you may learn a lot about Ted that you did not already know. You can also read about his trip, now that he is back, in today’s Gazette.
Former educator, longtime Islander and Edgartown resident Gerry Moriarty developed a portable, compact and educational Scavenger Hunt that provides families with ideas for exploration, fun and adventure. Geared for children from 3 to 93, this open-ended kid’s guide to the Vineyard illustrates fun things for kids to find, see, smell and do. It has been sold in Vineyard gift, book and toy stores since last summer.
On Sunday, May 29, her FunHunters Scavenger Hunt was featured on the front page of the Boston Globe Travel section in an article entitled 22 Hot Tips for Summer. On June 22 from 12:30 to 4:30 p.m., ServSafe food sanitation training certification and recertification classes begin at Adult and Community Education of MV. The class covers all information needed for the ServSafe certificate exam from the National Restaurant Association. It is designed for safe food handling practices for food service personnel and anyone responsible for enforcement of the food sanitation code. Exam and materials are included. What began as a seedling of an idea in the fall of 2008 has grown into what is now a thriving, working garden and greenhouse at the Edgartown School. As part of Garden Celebration Day, today, June 10, at 3 p.m., the school will host a greenhouse dedication and celebration in honor of the dozens of families and businesses who have made the garden possible.
Rep. Tim Madden will speak to the Martha’s Vineyard Democrats on Saturday, June 11, from 9:30 to 11 a.m., at the Howes House, directly across from Alley’s in West Tisbury. Delegates to the recent Democratic state convention will share their impressions of the six candidates running in the primary in hopes of opposing Scott Brown in the 2012 senatorial election. The public is welcome.
Andrew Walsh of Edgartown graduated cum laude from the University of Hartford in Hartford, Conn., on May 15. He has earned a degree in art history. Congratulations, Andy!
The Edgartown Firemen’s Association will host an ice cream social on June 19, from 1 to 3 p.m. to celebrate the soft opening of the Edgartown Fire Museum. The 1855 hand pumper will start its journey from the Martha’s Vineyard Museum around 11 a.m. to the newly designed space behind the fire station, where it will remain on loan from the museum.
Pat Waller is back home after a great trip to Germany and Austria. As a Christmas present Pat received tickets to Germany to visit her son, Zack, who is studying there until July, and then on Mother’s Day she was presented with tickets to see the famous Lipizzaner horses perform in Austria.
So after many hours of traveling she arrived in Germany to what would be a whirlwind tour. Zack was ready to show her everything they could see in the time she was there. They did a lot of sightseeing, but the most touching was their visit to a concentration camp.
Then it was off to Austria for the show and it was not disappointing. You could not touch any of the beautiful white horses and you could not take pictures, but Pat said the grounds were absolutely pristine. She saw the pastures and babies, who are born black. They packed a lot into her trip and she says it was a good one.
