The holiday weekend swept through Chilmark as it always does, with lots of chores still to do and the first wave of visitors here hoping for fun in the sun. The weather tried to please everyone but there was a lot of fog on occasion. Everyone seemed happy to be here and that is what makes it a holiday weekend. The parades and speeches helped to focus on the meaning of the weekend and that was good.

Wedding tents were up all over town. I saw them at the Captain Flanders House, the Allen Farm and another on South Road. I know there were more. Cheers to all the brides with the courage to challenge the New England spring weather!

The Menemsha Café has started on their summer schedule. Josh will be serving breakfast and lunch from 8 a.m. to 3 p.m. weekdays and serving dinner from 5:30 to 8:30 p.m. on Fridays and Saturdays.

There will be a service at the Abel’s Hill Cemetery on June 3 for Barbara Seward, who died in January. She is missed as she was a force through several generations, always happy, interested and making plans. We miss her in our midst.

Barbara Ireland and Betty Casper of Milwaukee, Wisc., were at the home of the late Georgia Ireland on South Road to prepare the house for the summer season when many of the Ireland family will visit.

We all send happy birthday wishes to Hildy Mitchell of Vineyard Haven, who will celebrate on June 6. Her husband, Donald, will celebrate his special day on August 4. The couple, who live in Vineyard Haven, have long Chilmark roots and we are happy to remember them on their special days.

Liz Gude tells us that her daughter, Sarah Commerford, of Holliston, has a new Web site featuring recipes and cooking information. It is Whatscookinginyourworld.com.

Congratulations from us all to Greg and Lois Mayhew on the birth of their grandson, Rasmus Van der Krogt Mayhew, and to parents, Todd and Audrey Mayhew. Cheers to all!

Mildred Mayhew, long of Chilmark, is now residing at the Henrietta Brewer House in Vineyard Haven. She will be happy to see her friends.

The Chilmark Community Church will hold the annual Blessing of the Fleet in Menemsha on Sunday, June 5, at 9 a.m. The service will be held near the Menemsha Texaco station. All are welcome to this festive event.

John Maloney will lead the third and final poetry workshop on June 8 at the Chilmark Public Library at 5:30 p.m. The public is invited at no charge.

Cochairman Zee Gamson of the Chilmark Democratic party invites us all to the library on June 14 from 5 to 7 p.m. for a review and update on Medicare. She will have speakers and hear questions. All ages can benefit from the information to be discussed. Everyone is welcome.

Larry and Janet Bell of Meadow Lane are happy to tell us of the birth of their granddaughter, Eliza Rose Wechsler. She was born on May 18 in New York city to Sarah Bell and Jay Wechsler. Her great-grandparents are Harold and Barbara Bell of Stonewall Road. Barbara Benefor of White Plains and Bob Wechsler of Scarsdale are also Eliza’s happy grandparents. Cheers from us all!

A summer preview of the arts and culture activities that are coming up this summer will be offered at the Grange Hall in West Tisbury on June 7 from 2 to 6 p.m. The intent is to inform the hospitality industry of what events are scheduled so that guests can be advised. All are welcome to come and learn what is in the works.

Hugh and Suzy Weisman were at their Chilmark home for the long weekend and were happy to have Henry and Judy Kinstlinger visiting with their children and grandchildren.

Tom Dresser has a new book out now and available at local book sources. It is The Wampanoag Tribe of Martha’s Vineyard: Colonization to Recognition. The book is up-to-date, with interviews with local residents.

Bill Gilmour of Wayland is at his Larsen Lane home for a spring visit. He has made a recovery from last year’s serious fall and is looking forward to returning for a longer stay. His daughter, Betsy, and her husband, Bill, accompanied him from Wayland and enjoyed the weekend at their Larsen Lane cottage.

Bill Vincent opened the Lucy Vincent house for the summer season.

The doctors Howard and Elizabeth Harrison are at their Menemsha home for an extended stay. Daughter, Anne, with her husband, Kevin Dunk, and their children, Patrick, Jack and Molly, came from Concord to join them for the holiday weekend.
