Art of the Process

Island-raised artist Susan Johnson’s exhibition of impressonist works, Martha’s Vineyard Landscapes: Paintings & Drawings, will be on display at the Chilmark Library through May 19 during normal hours. A reception for Ms. Johnson is slated for Saturday, May 14, from 3 to 5 p.m.

Ms. Johnson grew up in Mt. Kisco, N.Y., and moved ot the Vineyard at age 11. She has bachelor and master’s degrees of art from Pratt Institute. She is in the graduate art education program at Boston University, and has just been awarded a scholarship for their summer painting program in Tuscany, Italy this summer.

The paintings are based on the plein air genre, concerned with light, emotion, sense of place. Scenes include ponds, paths, and trees in Chilmark and Tisbury, including Beetlebung Corner and Tashmoo.

This show is also concerned with development and process. Included are acrylic paintings on canvas, and notan studies with graphite on paper.

Ms. Johnson’s brother is Island nature photographer Tim Johnson.
