Daffodils are blooming, Gio’s has opened for the season, spring is officially here. And high school sports remain in full swing.
Boys’ Tennis
In the team’s second meeting of the season Tuesday, the Vineyarders again swept Somerset to move to a 4-0 record in the EAC. According to coach Ned Fennessey, the match marks the first time all the Vineyard singles players (Reid Yennie, Kent Leonard and Justice Yennie) have swept their opponents in identical 6-0, 6-0 sets.
Sophomores Austin Stevenson and Jackson Koorses played for the first time in the number two doubles spot, winning their match in straight sets, 6-4, 6-1.
On Saturday, the boys took on the challenge of playing 6-1 Westport and rose to the occasion, handing their opponents a second loss. Sophomore Justice Yennie blanked opponent Sean Raudonaitis 6-0, 6-0.
The boys are now 7-1 for the season. They will play two away matches this week.
Girls’ Lacrosse
The girls suffered two tough losses last week, falling 26-16 to Cohasset and 14-11 to Wayland before coming back Tuesday with a 17-5 victory over Coyle Cassidy. The win keeps the team undefeated in the EAC.
Sophomore Alayna Hutchinson and senior Niki Alexander kick-started the Vineyard scoring, nabbing each and every ball off the draw and, in one first-half instance, running immediately downfield for a goal (Alayna scored her first of four goals in this manner).
Senior captain Molly Fischer contributed five goals and one assist, notching the last score of the game with 37 seconds left on the clock, while junior Madison Hughes had two goals and four assists. In total, 11 different Vineyard players scored against the Warriors.
The team played Bourne Thursday (scores were unavailable at press time) and will take on Hopkinton in a home night game this Saturday at 6:30 p.m. They are 6-3 on the season and 4-0 in the EAC.
Track
The track squads took on a 5-0 Bishop Feehan squad Tuesday, falling 84-52 (boys) and 114-22 (girls). The underclassmen will travel off-Island Saturday for the MSTCA Freshman/Sophomore Meet, and return home to compete with their teammates in a Tuesday dual meet against EAC opponent Coyle Cassidy. The Tuesday meet will take place at 3 p.m.
Other Sports
Pitcher Will Stewart took the win for the Vineyarders last Wednesday in their 12-7 victory over Bishop Stang, going seven innings and contributing two RBIs and a double. Sophomore Jack Roberts was two for five with an RBI, and junior Chris Morris had four RBIs.
The boys lost 4-2 to Somerset on Tuesday and will play two away games against Chatham and Coyle Cassidy this week.
The team is now 4-8.
Girls’ tennis returns from a week off Monday to take on Chatham at home, and will play Coyle Cassidy at home on Thursday. Softball plays the same schedule this week, with a 3 p.m. Monday game against Chatham and Thursday EAC game against Coyle Cassidy.
Boys’ lacrosse takes on Bishop Stang at home at 3 p.m. on Tuesday.
