Reflecting on the award he had just been given by Cape and Islands state Rep. Timothy Madden on Monday, Edgartown selectman Michael Donaroma said winning it was the easiest thing he’d ever done.

The plaque he was presented was recognition of Mr. Donaroma’s involvement with Daybreak’s employment program, in particular 29 years of employing Sumner Grover at his nursery and landscaping business.

Daybreak operates through Martha’s Vineyard Community Services to provide employment and other assistance for Islanders in need.

Mr. Donaroma and Mr. Grover were to have attended a function at the statehouse on April 5, but bad weather stopped the ferries from running. So instead, Mr. Madden turned up at the Monday afternoon meeting of the selectmen this week.

Mr. Grover thanked his employer and briefly said he had enjoyed his nearly three decades of work.

Said Mr. Donaroma: “Sumner, getting this award was the easiest thing I’ve ever done. I use you as an example for all the employees.”
