We have been living a true Island spring — the mainland is having sun and warm weather and we are having fog and cool weather. But the upside of this story is when the city people are having hot scorching weather, we are having a cool sea breeze. So we will get our payback in July and August.

Once again my school birthday list has run out so I will catch up next week.

However, special wishes go out to our chief of police, Tony Bettencourt and to Dave Alton who shares the same day.

Also birthday wishes go out to the Cavallo Family. As my fellow writer Linley Dolby said in her article, we can never remember whose day is first. So happy birthday to Donna, Coo and Jonas who all celebrated their day this past week. Or is it Lucas? First I have to get the boys straight!

Happy anniversary wishes go to Joel and Joanne DeRoche, who celebrate their fourth anniversary on May 4.

Pat and Steve Waller were very proud and happy to receive a letter from Timothy Madden congratulating their son Zachary for being on the dean’s list at Cornell University. Zach is in Germany for this semester and has been traveling all over Europe. He just returned from Paris over Easter and I just saw that he is headed for Switzerland in a week or so.

The regional high school Minnesingers, just back from their tour of Prague and Paris, present their 2011 spring shows, The Music of America: Give Our Regards to Broadway. The performance will be May 7 at 8 p.m. and May 8 at 3 p.m. at the high school Performing Arts Center. Tickets are $10 for adults and $5 for students. For information call 508-693-5255.

Vineyarders are invited to nominate a young person (ages 15-20) from the Island to serve as a delegate to the 2011 Youth Leadership Summit for Sustainable Development. It will be held from June 18 to 24. An orientation will be held on Wednesday, May 4 from 4 to 5 p.m. in the high school library conference room. The Martha’s Vineyard Youth Leadership Initiative is a project of the Stone Soup Leadership Institute.

I have been following Holly Mercier on Facebook as she has made her fluke rigs during the winter months. Now she is anxious for the first bass. She is a landscaper by day and fisherman by night. I wish I had her energy. So Holly, here is a tip from my dad, who was the fisherman in the family: He used to say when the magnolia trees are blooming the bass will soon be here. Hope you catch a big one soon.

Have a great week, and keep the home candles burning.
