Trainings for Islanders who want to learn more about becoming a volunteer for Red Cross disaster services — and become a member of the Vineyard’s disaster assistance team — will be offered by the Red Cross on Friday, April 29, from 6 to 9 p,m, and Saturday, April 30, beginning at 8:30 a.m. They will take place at the Oak Bluffs Council on Aging located at 21 Wamsutta avenue. Beverages and snacks will be provided.

The Friday evening session introduces the Red Cross and its mission in responding to disasters, and is the required basic orientation for all new volunteers. There are numerous disaster activities in which one can become involved; these can be explored further after completing the steps to becoming an emergency services volunteer.

The day-long training on Saturday, Foundations of Disaster Mental Health, is for people licensed in mental health. The course prepares licensed mental health professionals to provide for and respond to the psychological needs of people across the continuum of disaster preparedness, response and recovery.

All Red Cross disaster training is free of charge.
