There will be an opening reception for the Martha’s Vineyard Museum’s newest exhibit, When This You See, Remember Me: Samplers from the Museum Collection, on Saturday, Nov. 27 from 3 to 5 p.m.

Samplers were often created to signify a rite of passage for young girls. The sampler was a way to show off skill, record important family information and convey morality through a verse or two.

This exhibit will highlight the museum’s collection of samplers but also give visitors the chance to learn more about the girls behind the needlework. At the opening ceremony, head curator Bonnie Stacy will also recount the tales and mysteries surrounding some of these pieces.

The textile collection at the museum has grown over almost 90 years to include myriad examples of Vineyarders’ weaving, sewing, quilting and embroidery. From simple wool blankets made by “Nance,” an enslaved woman in West Tisbury, to a high-style embroidered bedspread, each piece of cloth illustrates its own story.

The reception is in the Pease House galleries.
