To Speak at Union Chapel

The Rev. Dr. Robert Michael Franklin Jr. is the guest preacher this Sunday at Union Chapel in Oak Bluffs at 10 a.m.

He is the 10th president of Morehouse College in Atlanta, Ga. Previously, he served as the presidential distinguished professor of social ethics at Candler School of Theology, Emory University, and president of the Interdenominational Theological Center, both in Atlanta. He also served as a program officer in the human rights and social justice program at the Ford Foundation.

A native of Chicago, Reverend Franklin was educated at Morgan Park High School, Morehouse College, Harvard Divinity School, and the University of Chicago Divinity School. In 1973 he received an English-Speaking Union scholarship to attend the University of Durham in England.

In 2005, he served as theologian in residence for the Chautauqua Institution. He serves on numerous boards including the character education partnership and public broadcasting of Atlanta. He has provided commentaries for National Public Radio’s All Things Considered, and televised commentary for Atlanta Interfaith Broadcasting.

Union Chapel is non-denominational and welcomes visitors from all faiths. It is located at the upper end of Circuit Avenue in Oak Bluffs. Organ preludes by Garrett Brown commence at 9:40 a.m. and the service starts at 10 a.m. Informal summer attire is acceptable.
