Ashrita Furman, the man with the most records in the Guinness Book of Records, will try to add to his list of more than 100 current records by attempting a grape-catching record this Wednesday on the Vineyard.

It sounds silly, but Mr. Furman calls the record quite challenging. The event involves two people — a grape thrower and a grape catcher, who stand 15 feet apart. The record is for the most grapes a person can catch in their mouth in three minutes. Mr. Furman, the catcher, and his friend, Bipin Larkin, the thrower, broke the record last year at the Grand Canyon, when Mr. Furman caught 182 grapes, more than one per second. Always looking for an interesting venue, he was delighted to get permission to make a new attempt at the renowned Bunch of Grapes Bookstore in Vineyard Haven.

Over the past 25 years, Ashrita has set or beaten a total of almost 300 records in numerous categories. His records usually involve a physical challenge such as somersaulting the greatest distance (more than 12 miles along Paul Revere’s Ride in Massachusetts) or doing the most abdominal crunches in one hour (9,628) but in the case of Wednesday’s attempt, concentration will be the key.

Spectators are welcome on Wednesday, July 28, at noon in the parking lot behind the Bunch of Grapes Bookstore on 54 Main street in Vineyard Haven.
