Matt Tobin of Chilmark won the Klays for Kids Charity Skeet Shoot at the Martha’s Vineyard Rod and Gun Club. Held under ideal weather conditions on Sunday, July 18 at the club’s skeet range, this was the 13th annual Klays for Kids, which benefits the club’s three projects for Island kids.

Mr. Tobin bested seven other skeet shooters to take the first place in the shoot, while Phil Hughes of Oak Bluffs picked up second place, followed by Bill Damora of Point Pleasant Beach, N.J., who took third place.

Each participant shot a minimum of two rounds of 25 targets, but contestants could shoot as many additional rounds as he or she wanted. The goal was for the shooters to put their two best rounds of 25 targets together for the highest score.

Each participant paid anywhere from 25 cents per miss to a dollar per missed target, dependent on the shooter’s ability; the club collected more than $200 this year.

This year’s event had some interesting moments, as single targets were released on report. This caused a slight disruption and change in tactics, as targets were presented in a different sequence as in a standard round of skeet.

The club’s annual Skeet Championship will take place on Sunday, August 15. The public is invited to attend the meet, and refreshments will be available throughout the day.
