Vineyard musical favorite Kahoots closed their appearance at Saturday’s Best Festival, held at Featherstone Center for the Arts in Oak Bluffs, by noting that they’d just finished “the mellowest set we’ve played in a long time.”

Mellow was the word of the afternoon at the Best Festival, which featured a lineup of Vineyard groups including Pierre, Colin Ruel, Belle and the Bees, and Dukes County Love Affair, as well as Boston-based band Apollo Sunshine. Deejay Pretty Ninja provided between-set entertainment. Even the loudest guitar notes seemed subdued by the calm summer atmosphere, no doubt helped by the sense of community present among the crowd, which numbered well over 100 people.

“We know everybody,” said May Oskan of Vineyard Haven, with only a slight hint of hyperbole behind her words.

Concertgoers brought blankets, pillows and picnic baskets to the show, making the most of an opportunity to lounge beneath the shady pines and oaks of the Featherstone grounds. For those who did not bring a basket of their own, Scottish Bakehouse was on hand to serve up burgers and cilantro-buttered corn.

The festival continued on Sunday at Nectar’s, where Kahoots, Belle and the Bees, and Apollo Sunshine joined Drug Rug and Nina Violet for a late-night set.
