It’s Double Features at the Shaw Cramer Gallery for the summer season. The first double show — one on each level — opens with an artists’ reception on Friday, July 2, from 6 to 8 p.m.

The main gallery show will introduce the abstract expressionist paintings of Marie-Louise Rouff, with Kari Lønning’s baskets and Christian Brown’s furniture.

As a new Island artist, Marie-Louise Rouff creates mixed media paintings on panel and canvas that quietly pulse with energy. The colors are deeply layered, artfully revealing glimpses of the under layers. “My work is about the landscape,” the artist said.

Internationally known artist and author Kari Lønning creates hand-dyed and woven basket sculptures. Her contemporary fiber vessels have won awards and are in museum collections. She is known for her double-walled baskets and her hairy pots, combining classic forms with innovative surface designs.

Architect Christian Brown continues to explore sustainable handmade furniture. Using repurposed cork, MDF, eco-resin with maple he builds sculpture-like chairs, stools and tables. Each piece has his signature style of the unexpected line, material and profile.

The upper gallery show will feature Island porcelain artist Jennifer McCurdy with abstract painter Jessie Morgan. Each explores the possibilities of the fluid line, one in pure white, the other in color.

The shows run until July 14 at the gallery at 56 Main street in Vineyard Haven. For details, call 508-696-7323 or see shawcramergallery.com.
