Roberta Gross will host an opening reception today, Friday, June 11 from 4 to 6 p.m. for an exhibit of her abstract paintings at the Chilmark branch of the Bank of Martha’s Vineyard on South Road. The exhibit will run through June 18.

In her art, Ms. Gross plays with colors, textures, shapes and lines, arranging and rearranging fragments of paper she has created by stamping, burning, splattering, embossing and texturing with gels and acrylic pastes.

In her Chilmark exhibit, Ms. Gross is experimenting with burning Tyvek, the material builders use in the early stages of preparing a new house. The paper appears lacey and creates an interesting dialogue with the colorful, textured layers on which they are attached. She is also experimenting with graphite and pure powdered pigments applied to textured backgrounds. These new paintings reflect a mix of impulsiveness, chance effects and controlled painting.

Roberta Gross teaches abstract art courses at Featherstone Center for the Arts. She will hold workshops in connection with Louisa Gould’s third annual abstract art show in the fall.
