For many years, the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club has sent two members to the mainland, to participate in the Boston Museum of Fine Arts’ exhibition, Art in Bloom. This annual April event is a collaboration between garden clubs from throughout New England and professional designers collaborating to produce vibrant floral displays, each one interpreting a different piece of art from the museum’s collection.

This year, the task is in the artful hands of Edgartown sisters Barbara Shriber and Louise Thorpe. The ladies have been assigned a Greek marble sculpture of a female torso draped with a thin clinging garment. The work, dating to around the second century B.C. is thought to be a representation of Aphrodite, Greek goddess of love and sexuality. Their finished work will be on display this weekend, Saturday through Monday, April 24 to 26.
