Vineyard fishermen did well in the state’s annual saltwater fishing contest, with six Island anglers taking prizes at an event held on Valentine’s Day at the Eastern Fishing and Outdoor Exposition in Worcester.

The state keeps tallies for the largest fish taken in a wide array of categories from Jan. 1 to Nov. 30.

Helena Kirschenbaum of Oak Bluffs won in the women’s category for a 42-pound, six-ounce striped bass.

Zachary Tilton of Vineyard Haven won a prize for a 61-pound, 14-ounce striped bass. The state record for the largest striped bass is 73 pounds for a fish caught in 1981.

Bill Potter of Oak Bluffs won a prize for a five-pound, eight-ounce Spanish mackerel.

Tony Canha led the junior category with a 43-pound, 11-ounce wahoo.

Keith McArt of Oak Bluffs won a prize for a 16-pound, nine-ounce false albacore he landed during the fall Martha’s Vineyard Striped Bass and Bluefish Derby.

And Wyatt Jenkinson of West Tisbury, a junior fisherman, won for the largest bonito, with his nine-pound, 11-ounce fish. Mr. Jenkinson’s fish weighed more than the largest bonito caught by an adult in the state competition.

A total of 41 awards were given out. Four of the six Vineyard fish were weighed in at Dick’s Bait and Tackle Shop in Oak Bluffs.
