While other critics flocked to Utah for Sundance screenings, 10-year-old Olivia Knight took a few hours off her Chilmark School homework and play to give you the lowdown on the high-quality short film collection playing in her town this weekend courtesy of the Martha’s Vineyard Film Festival.

The festival organizers have teamed up with the Gazette to bring you reviews by Island kids for each event in the winter series, Film Family Feast.

Today, Olivia reviews Saturday’s program, A New You!, which is a collection of short films by various directors from Canada, Latvia, United States, Germany, Italy, United Kingdom and Iran. The program runs 76 minutes, and is recommended for ages five to adult. This is the last family screening for this season’s series.

Lindsey Scott, the director of children’s programming for the festival, writes of the program: “It can be hard to open up and let people know who we really are. But when we do share our true selves with others we make some wonderful discoveries about the world and aboutourselves. Join these winning characters as they reach out to their family and friends in meaningful new ways.”

It all happens at 5 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 30 at the Chilmark Community Center, the last event of the festival’s new winter series. Dinner prepared by Island chef Amy Miller will be for sale, $10 for adults, $5 for children. The evening will also feature a musical performance by Rick Bausman and The Drum Workshop, Inc. Tickets are $6 and are available at the door.

Red and Blue

Red and Blue are balloons. Red is mean and Blue is nice. Red is fast. Blue is the opposite, but Blue can do flips. He tries again. He really can, so he finds Red. They race and Blue flips into victory. He’s finally won! This rhyming song will make you smile. It made me smile, at least!

Pig’s Happiness

Pig’s Happiness was about pigs that come to the forest in a camper and litter all over the place. They only think of themselves. A wild pig shows the pigs to respect the environment. It was good.

Crema Suprema

This black and white film is about two chefs who hate each other. They each make a dessert and ruin each other’s. Suddenly one chef finds food coloring and the movie gets color! They take each other’s dessert and stick candles on them and put their ovens on “Nuclear” and “Explosive.” The desserts blow up and mix and make the best dessert in the world! This film was awesome!

My Name is Tuan

This film is about a boy named Tuan who wants to play with a girl. I don’t understand it.

King of the Island

King of the Island was about a boy without a father who has a great imagination. The boy imagines his father strong and big and when he finds out his father is alive and coming back on a ship he gets excited to see him. When his father gets there he isn’t like the boy expected. The boy doesn’t like his father, but he finally realizes how nice his father is. His father teaches the boy about the world around him. I like this film.

Bottled Promise

Bottled Promise was about a girl and a boy who talk through cans. The boy moves away and the girl becomes sad. But magic wind takes the girl to the boy. This film was strange.

Cherry on the Cake

This film was about a girl on her birthday. She doesn’t get enough attention. Every time someone ignores her, she shrinks. Finally people notice her and she grows. I think this film was really good.

Hajar’s Wedding

This movie was a song about a wedding. It was weird.

The Secret Friend

The Secret Friend is about a boy who doesn’t have so much fun playing the piano. But when another boy comes, he teaches the boy that it’s not all about boring songs. You can add your own spin to it. It was good.
