Dr. David S. Martin, deaf education specialist and Professor and Dean Emeritus at Gallaudet University in Washington, DC, will speak at 11 a.m. on Sunday, Nov. 22 at the Unitarian Universalist Society of Martha’s Vineyard in Vineyard Haven. His talk, titled One World: Unity Among Differences, will focus on his research and teaching of problem-solving strategies. Dr. Martin will describe the differences and underlying similarities in the ways that deaf children from different cultures demonstrate that they can indeed be equal to hearing children in these fundamentally important skills.

Dr. Martin will also play Bach’s Chorale Prelude on the society’s recently restored Hook and Hastings pipe organ.

Dr. Martin is currently a visiting research professor at Open University in England, University of Massachusetts in Boston and the University of the Witwatersrand, Johannesburg, South Africa. He has been awarded 3 Fulbright Senior Scholar Fellowships to continue his work. He has done research in deaf education in schools in the United States, the People’s Republic of China and England. His special interest has been in working with the educators of the deaf community in China, their methods being quite different from ours. He has recently served as a consultant on deaf education for the special education program in the Martha’s Vineyard Schools. Prior to his work with the deaf community, he spent a year at the Harvard Divinity School studying for the Unitarian ministry.
