Moon

Tonight’s crescent moon appears low in the southern sky, in the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius. The moon will be first quarter on Sunday night, in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus.

On Monday night, the gibbous moon saddles up near the bright planet Jupiter in Capricornus. The two are close and hang in the southern sky through the night.

In the nights ahead, the moon passes by three outer planets. It passes by Jupiter and Neptune on Monday night. The moon appears in close proximity to the distant planet Uranus on Thursday night. The moon and Uranus are in the zodiacal constellation Pisces.

Spotting either Uranus or Neptune is not all that difficult, but you’ll need help, a small telescope, a current chart of the outer planets movement amid the stars and luck. The most experienced amateur astronomers can sometimes pick out the distant planets with a pair of binoculars. It can be done.

Morning Planets

The red planet Mars rises in the eastern sky after midnight. The planet is in the zodiacal constellation Gemini, moving towards Cancer.

Venus, the brightest of all planets, rises before sunrise. The ringed planet Saturn appears above Venus. Both are in the zodiacal constellation Virgo.
