As the fall athletic season heads into the home stretch, the field hockey and boys’ soccer teams this week moved closer to a berth in the Massachusetts Interscholastic Athletic Association tournament.

Meanwhile the football team stumbled with a crushing loss to Somerset last Friday, while boys’ and girls’ cross country each posted wins against Bishop Stang and Barnstable as they wrap up another stellar season under coach Joe Schroeder.

Cross Country

Both teams dominated Bishop Stang during a 5K run through the Manuel F. Correllus State Forest last Wednesday. Vineyarder Max Conley topped all runners with a time of 17:29, leading his team to an easy 15-49 win.

The first six runners to cross the finish line were all from the Vineyard. Cooper Chapman finished second with a time of 17:50, Forrest Harcourt finished third with a time of 17:59, Taylor Smith finished fourth with a time of 18:04, Anthony Piland was fifth with a time of 18:06 and Mike Schroeder was sixth with a time of 18:07.

The girls were also impressive, winning 19-38, led by Megan Dreyer, who took first place with a time of 20:08. Shivonne Schofield was third (21:23), Julia Sadowski was fourth (22:34), Eva Balboni was fifth (23:13) and Hallie D’Angelo was sixth (23:16).

On Tuesday the boys again prevailed over Barnstable 25-34. They were led by Piland, who finished third (17:40), Harcourt fourth (17:44), Schroeder fifth (17:56), Chapman sixth (17:53), Conley seventh (17:57) and Smith eighth (18:00).

The girls also overtook Barnstable 21-34, led by Dreyer who finished first (19:46) and Schofield who took sixth (21:21).

Football

The Vineyard team struggled to find its footing Saturday against Eastern Athletic Conference rival Somerset, managing only 79 yards of total offense in a 20-0 loss.

Coach Donald Herman credited Somerset for a playing a strong game, and said his team was flat from the opening kick. “We had no intensity, and when you play with no intensity against a quality team you get beat. It’s that simple,” he said.

The Vineyarders are now 3-3 on the season, and 1-2 in the highly contested conference and will not qualify for post-season play.

The team now enters a tough stretch of four consecutive road games, starting tonight at Seekonk. They next play at home Nov. 21 against Brighton, the date previously set aside for the Island Cup game against Nantucket.

Field Hockey

The team played to a 2-2 tie against Bishop Stang last Wednesday, beat Notre Dame on Saturday 2-0, and played to a 3-3 tie against Needham on Monday.

In the game against Bishop Stang, the Vineyard fell behind early, but in the second half Katie Haynes scored two quick goals — with assists from Hayley Pierce and Kate Cecilio — to give her team the lead. The Spartans then scored late to end the game 2-2.

In Saturday’s win against Notre Dame Academy of Hingham, the Vineyard jumped out to a quick 2-0 lead and never looked back. Abbey Entner scored in the first five minutes on an assist from Pierce, and Olivia Gross scored at the 10-minute mark on an assist from Kate Cecilio.

Goaltender Amanda Rose had six saves in the shutout.

In the 3-3 tie on Monday, Maggie Johnson scored the only goal of the first half on an assist from Cecilio. In the second half the Vineyard added two more on goals from Nikki Alexander and Meghan McHugh, to seal the tie.

The team record now stands at 7-2-3.

Boys’ Soccer

The team tied Coyle Cassidy on Tuesday and defeated Mansfield on the road on Monday 2-1. Their record is 7-6-1, and the team will need to play well down the stretch to secure a berth in the state tournament. There are three games left; the next one is at home tomorrow against Bishop Feehan at 12:30 p.m.
