350.org invites Vineyarders to gather at the East Chop Lighthouse to express support for stabilizing Earth’s CO2 level at 350 parts per million (ppm) at a Climate Vigil on Saturday, Oct. 24 at 10 a.m. Some experts claim that Earth’s CO2 level is presently at 387 ppm, and must be reduced to 350 ppm in order to halt catastrophic climate change. This can be accomplished by embracing an assortment of measures, including weatherizing our buildings, driving less, shutting down fossil-fueled power plants, and harnessing the clean energies of sunlight and wind.

This gathering is one of over 3,000 simultaneous events occurring around the world. Photos of the iconic gatherings and participant numbers will be gathered and taken to the Climate Change Conference in Copenhagen and shared with world leaders. Vineyarders are encouraged to walk, bike, and/or carpool to the Lighthouse.

Islanders are also invited to watch Oak Bluffs: A Storm-Smart Town, on MVTV channel 13. Filmed at the East Chop Lighthouse, this special program by the Vineyard Conservation Society addresses the local consequences of climate change. Check mvtv.org for the airing schedule for this special program.
