Moon and Jupiter

Two celestial neighbors, the moon and Jupiter, will dominate our skies in the nights ahead. The biggest planet in our solar system, Jupiter rises in the East at about sunset. Jupiter outshines all the stars of night and its appearance can’t be missed. Jupiter is in the zodiacal constellation Capricornus. At midnight, Jupiter is high in the sky.

The moon is gibbous this weekend and low in the southwestern sky. The moon is moving through the zodiacal constellation Sagittarius.

The near full moon appears right beside the brilliant Jupiter on Wednesday night. Full moon, the corn moon, is next Friday.

Morning Planets

The red planet Mars appears in the zodiacal constellation Gemini. The planet is increasing in brightness and getting larger. To see it, an observer either has to stay up late or rise early. Mars is high in the eastern sky prior to dawn. It rises in the east after 2 a.m. The planet has a dull reddish color.

Venus, the brightest planet in our skies, rises in the east just before dawn. Venus appears above the bright star Regulus, in the zodiacal constellation Leo.

The ringed planet Saturn can’t be seen this month. It is amid the sun’s glow.
