A Jazz Tribute to President Obama, an original work of words and music by Columbia Law School professor and columnist for The Nation Patricia Williams and composer and saxophonist Oliver Lake, will be performed on Saturday, July 25, at 4 p.m. in Ocean Park as the centerpiece of Della Hardman Day. The performance is free and open to the public.

This fifth annual Della Hardman Day is a festival celebrating the arts, diversity and a zest for living on Martha’s Vineyard. Della Hardman (1922-2005), an artist, educator and writer, began visiting the Vineyard at age three and was a year-round resident from 1986. She loved the Island and its people and became a community activist and Vineyard Gazette columnist who encouraged everyone to ‘savor the moment!’ She met then-Illinois State Sen. Barack Obama in August 2004 during his family vacation on the Island. Her Christmas card that year featured her photo with him andsaid that he was destined for great success.

On Friday, July 24 there will be a sunset concert by the Spirituals Choir, Jim Thomas, director, at the East Chop Lighthouse at 7 p.m. The lighthouse will be open for tours and winners of the Savor the Moment High School Essay Contest will be announced.

A Savor the Moment photo exhibition and reception is on Saturday, July 25, at 2 p.m. at the Oak Bluffs Public Library. For details, see online dellahardmanday.com.
