July is on the ground and running, and I hope we can all keep up! Lots of activities, many of them in Chilmark, are planned both for the upcoming weekend and for the busy month ahead. The large yacht that was moored briefly off the Menemsha beach set the tone for the summer. It was reported to be 340 feet long and had on board: a motorboat, a sailboat, a helicopter and several cars. Way to go! Room for me?

This week our popular police chief, Tim Rich, retires after thirty years on the job. We will all miss him and wish him a happy retirement. Congratulations to his successor, Brian Cioffi, who took over July 1.

We send condolences to the family and many friends of Jacqueline Sexton, who died this week. I had the privilege of serving with Jackie as a Chilmark library trustee for many years and I valued our friendship. She also wrote the Chilmark column for the local newspapers for many years and we all enjoyed her wonderful reports on the town’s doings in every season. We will all miss her and her special take on Chilmark. Plans for a memorial will appear in this paper at a later date.

Dick and Nancy Rossman of Tiasquam Ridge Lane are celebrating their 40th wedding anniversary this week and their children and grandchildren are all visiting for the week to join in the festivities. Their daughter Lauren and her husband Steven and their daughters Maddie and Mia are here from Potomac, Md., and their daughter, Amy, with her husband Sam and their daughter Emily are here from Atlanta. Cheers from us all!

The public ball field at Peaked Hill will be named for its most outstanding player on Sunday, July 5, at 9 a.m. The field will be dedicated to the memory of David Flanders and from now on known as Flanders Field. There will be a doubleheader softball game following the program. Oh, to bring back just one of those wonderful Sunday morning games with David driving them home!

John and Meg Verret are now at their home in Quansoo for the coming summer months. Meg retired this week after 26 years as a school nurse at the Cottage Street School in Sharon. She was recently honored at a dinner and presented with the Norfolk County teacher of the year award. The Verrets are in the process of retiring to Chilmark.

Ed Greenebaum and Joan Caulton are enjoying a busy holiday week with visits from Joan’s daughter, Sue, with her husband, Mark Dooley, and their children Caroline, Greta and Anna, who are here from San Mateo, and Joan’s son, David Caulton, with his wife Gina and children Teddy, Cara and Rebecca, who are here from Snoqualmie, Wa.

The Chilmark Free Public Library’s Wednesday night program will be a talk by Dr. Jelle Atyema of Boston University and Woods Hole. He will discuss his research on lobsters. The Thursday night program at 5 p.m. at the library will be a family film entitled the Realm of the Lobster. These two events are open to the public at no charge; the Friends of the Library and the Menemsha Fisheries Development Fund are the sponsors.

The Chilmark library wants us to know that after lots of effort the library now has its own Web site, and much is available to the public there. They also now offer the public the catalog of material at the library. Please go to chilmarklibrary.org and learn more.

Chilmark is fortunate to have such an active and interesting center for dance, theatre, music and the arts and that is what the Yard on Middle Road now is, surely something for everyone. They are opening with a performance by the Tony-Award winning Lemon Andersen, Brooklyn based hip-hop artist, who will perform excerpts from his production County of Kings: The Beautiful Struggle. He is a poet and performance artist who has performed in three Spike Lee films and appeared on the New York city stage. This Sunday evening, July 5, the Yard will offer an evening of Poetry at the Yard with Rose Styron, Linda Black, Michael West and others reading from their works. There will be a dance with deejay David Kish following the readings. Please call for details.
