Island police broke up several loud parties, made a number of arrests and responded to a high number of motor vehicle accidents over the weekend.

Edgartown

Edgartown police responded to 96 calls for service from early Friday morning through late Sunday.

On Saturday just after 4 p.m. Edgartown police responded to a moped accident on Upper Main street. Police found Jonata DaSilva, 21, of Edgartown, on the ground with several scrapes. Police determined that Mr. DaSilva rear-ended a vehicle stopped in traffic, and issued him a citation for operating a moped without a license.

On Saturday around 5 p.m. police responded to a motorcycle accident near the entrance to the airport on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road. Police found Carlton Stunkel, 28, of Chilmark, at the scene with obvious injuries to his left leg. Mr. Stunkel said he was traveling down-Island when he swerved to avoid a vehicle leaving the airport. Mr. Stunkel was issued a citation for operating without a license and negligent operation of a motor vehicle.

On Sunday around 1:30 p.m., police responded to a two-car accident on Upper Main street in front of the Stop & Shop. Police found Alison Cannon behind the wheel of one vehicle; a witness told officers that the other vehicle involved, a small black pickup truck, had fled the scene.

Ms. Cannon told police she was turning left into Stop & Shop when she was struck from behind by the black pickup; the female operator of the truck got out and asked her if she was okay. Ms. Cannon said she was not and advised her to call 911. The unidentified female driver then muttered something about insurance, police said, and fled the scene.

As of yesterday police were still trying to find the driver of the black pickup; the investigation is ongoing.

On Sunday around 2:20 a.m., police were dispatched to Twelfth street south for a male asleep on a resident’s front yard. Police placed the 27-year-old man into protective custody and later released him.

On Saturday at 12:30 a.m. police were called to a one-vehicle accident on Barnes Road in which the driver went off the side of the road and struck a tree. Police found Vera Almeida, of Tisbury, inside a Dodge Dakota with the air bags deployed; she was collared, boarded and removed from the vehicle.

Ms. Almeida told police she had been working since 6 a.m. in the morning and felt dizzy prior to the crash. She was not cited.

On Sunday around midnight police responded to the employee dorm of the Vineyard Golf Club for a report of a motor vehicle accident. A club employee called police after he heard a loud crash from somewhere near the golf course and found a Jeep Cherokee parked near the employee dorm that had obviously been in an accident.

Police determined the driver and owner of the vehicle, Ryan Lusigan, was driving back to the golf course and was going too fast when he went off the road and hit a tree. Mr. Lusigan left the scene of the accident and did not talk to police until the next day when he went to the police station to retrieve his keys. He was charged with negligent operation of a motor vehicle and leaving the scene of an accident with property damage.

On Friday just before 5 p.m., police received a call from an employee of the Farm Institute at Katama Farm who reported that his car had been stolen. Rob Goldfarb, 37, told police that his vehicle was parked in the employee parking area for several weeks, and that he had last seen it the previous week.

Mr. Goldfarb said he used the vehicle for storage and the battery was dead, with the plates and keys stored inside. The vehicle was also unregistered and the windshield was cracked. Police yesterday reported the apparently stolen car in fact had been borrowed by an employee.

West Tisbury

West Tisbury responded to 73 calls for service from Tuesday through Sunday. On Monday police responded to a call from a landowner off of Berry Beach on Tisbury Great Pond who reported that a hand-made sign reading: No Bathing Suits Required had been stolen. The investigation is ongoing.

Police were called to a minor motor vehicle accident on Monday at 1:40 p.m. in front of Alley’s. There were no injuries and no citations issued. Also on Monday police learned that strong winds had broken off a large limb of a tree on State Road that had struck a utility pole and burned through the primary wire. Police had to temporarily close a portion of State road and divert traffic.

On Tuesday police responded to a call of vandalism on Pin Oak Circle, and wound up talking to several young kids.

On Thursday police responded to a motor vehicle accident in front of the police station on Edgartown-West Tisbury Road near Mill Pond. The driver of a 2001 BMW reportedly tried to pass a Goodale cement truck in a no passing zone and collided with the truck. Police issued a citation to the 17-year-old driver for failure to use caution while passing.

On Friday police issued a citation to a person who borrowed the truck of a friend but then drove the vehicle on a field off Scrubby Neck Road. The person was cited for malicious destruction of property over $250.

On Sunday police issued a citation to a homeowner off Indian Hill Road for larceny over $250, after the person failed to make good on an agreement to rent out a room to a tenant. When the person tried to move in, the homeowner asked for additional money; when the would-be tenant refused to pay extra, the homeowner refused to give back the initial deposit.

Aquinnah

On Tuesday Aquinnah police assisted a crew from the highway department who were removing several tree limbs that had been felled by the high winds. On Friday police arrested a driver for unlicensed operation after making a motor vehicle stop at Aquinnah Circle.

On Friday around 11 p.m., police made a motor vehicle stop on State Road and issued a citation to the underage operator for minor transporting alcohol. The minor was given a field sobriety test and later released to his parents.

Tisbury

On Saturday around 7:30 p.m. police received a call that a pedestrian had been hit by a car at the Five Corners intersection. Police learned that a women driving a Mercury was driving west in the left lane on Beach Road when she struck a female pedestrian.

Police said that a white van traveling in the right lane came to an abrupt stop to allow the pedestrian to cross the road. The pedestrian then ran across the road but did not see the Mercury coming from the other direction and ran in front of it. The pedestrian was transported to Martha’s Vineyard Hospital by ambulance; her status as of yesterday was unknown.

No drivers were cited.

Finally, at the Dukes County Communications Center, the EMS radio station, one of the many radio stations there, stopped working at 10 p.m. Friday night.

Bardwell Electronics was called in; Doug Bardwell suspects lightning.

Susie Schofield, supervisor of the 911 communications center, was more cautious: “We’ve been struck by lightning before; we are not positive what it was,” she said.
