Bread Sale

Vineyard Committee on Hunger’s annual Bread and Bake Sale will be held Saturday, June 20, from 9 a.m. to 1:30 p.m., as ever under the Linden Tree next to the Capawock Theatre on Main street, Vineyard Haven. Both bread and baked goods will be available for purchase.

The Vineyard Committee on Hunger has chosen to donated the money from this year’s bread sale directly to Huruma (Mercy), the home for children depicted in Len and Georgia Morris’ film Rescuing Emmanuel.

Huruma was founded by Mama Zipporah. She says that after finding she could have no more children, “I asked God to give me another child. I just forgot to say how many!” She and her husband, Isaac, asked the state for a child and were given seven. They took these orphans in and then realized that they had been on the street with many other children, so over the years have adopted 150 kids. The necessity of dormitories and a school never got in the way of taking in more children.

This is the home where the Morrises took Emmanuel. It was too late for Emmanuel, who had been on the streets too long and could not adjust to the life at Huruma, a home with clothes, food, schooling and someone to care for him.

Mama Zipporah learned how to get help through the Kenyan government and became a nonprofit so she could take donations. Over the years, many churches and private groups and people have donated to Huruma. They raise their own cows, pigs and goats and have a very large garden, which helps with the food costs, but the meals a day for 150 babies, children and teenagers is a daunting task.

Twenty-Five of the children are HIV positive so Mama Zipporah maintains their delicate heath as well, and gets them the expensive drugs that they need. She has a nurse who visits and a tiny clinic, which she plans to expand. She is also trying to build bigger dormitories, as their current triple-decker bunks are literally side-by-side.

Although Huruma is not a fancy place to live, it is a place for the poorest of the poor to try and survive and even get an education. The committee has chosen this home to donate their fund to because it truly offers hope for the children living in the slums of Nairobi, Kenya.
