Congratulations to Aquinnah selectman Jim Newman who won reelection on Wednesday and will once again serve our community well. As of Wednesday evening, I did not have the exact figures but do know that the over-ride also passed. There will be a special town meeting on Tuesday evening, May 19 at 7 p.m. at the town hall.

Theresa A. Manning and Jamie L. Vanderhoop, coordinators for the Martha’s Vineyard Youth Task Force, will be sponsoring chat and chowder dinners in the respective school cafeterias from 6 to 7:30 p.m. to be held on Monday, May 18, at the Tisbury School, Wednesday, May 20, at the Edgartown School, Thursday, May 21, at Oak Bluffs, and on Tuesday, May 26, at the West Tisbury School for the West Tisbury and charter schools.

In February 2009, all Martha’s Vineyard students in grades seven to twelve took a survey that asked questions concerning risky behavior and substance abuse. The Youth Task Force has the results of this survey and would like to share them with the parents and/or guardians of the students. It is a free evening of food, door prizes, and a presentation along with fellow parents of seventh and eighth grade students. As an added bonus, each location will have a Family Fun Pack valued at over $200, filled with gift certificates for Giordano’s, Dairy Queen, Island Cove Mini Golf, Entertainment Cinemas and more — awarded to one lucky attendee. If your child’s school has at least 25 per cent parental participation at the dinner, a $300 prize of choice will be awarded to the school. You may attend the meetings at the respective school for your child or any of the above listed meetings. For further information, please call Theresa or Jamie at 508-696-5304.

The Miles of Memories Walk/Kayak will take place on Sunday, May 17, at noon at the little bridge in Oak Bluffs. Participants have the choice of walking or kayaking. Donations will assist those affected by Alzheimer’s Disease.

Reminder: the Tribal Environmental Health Expo will be held at the Harbor View tomorrow from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m.

Reminder: the library’s strategic planning forum has been rescheduled for Monday evening, May 18, from 5:30 to 8 p.m. Cheryl Bryan, library consultant, will be facilitating the forum. Light refreshments will be served.

Venturing out over the Mother’s Day weekend, after a fantastic brunch at Farm Neck Golf Club with Paul, Theresa and Noah and amid so many friends and neighbors, it was a delight to visit the new Oak Bluffs General Store open on Kennebec avenue. It was even more of a delight to visit with Skye Sonneborn and John Hartzband and their young infant Grayson. John’s brother Michael Hartzband is the manager of the General Store. The Irish music on Sunday afternoon was great.
