It is always a pleasure to hear from my dear friend, Anna Duarte. Anna wants you all to know she has returned from successful eye surgery, she is recuperating nicely from her accident, and, no surprise here, she will be Poppy Chair again for the American Legion. Anna and her Poppy Girls will be at strategic locations to hand you a poppy and gratefully accept your donations on Memorial Day weekend.
We are so proud of our graduating seniors, but four of them deserve special mention this weekend. Sarah Felder and Amy Sertl, from Our Town, and seniors Nicole Mercier and Danielle Fogg, will have their work featured in a photo show at Featherstone this weekend. The show opens tomorrow. There will be a special reception with refreshments from 4 to 6 p.m. Saturday. On Sunday, May 3, the hours are 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. I have seen their work at our high school; you will be amazed. I’ll see you there.
Judy Nichols was most pleasantly surprised for her 70th birthday which was on April 21. Actually, husband Steve and her sister lured her off Island on April 19. Judy thought it was going to be a simple luncheon at the Wharf Tavern in Warren, R.I. The Nichols’ don’t do simple. Thirty–two family members, including her four children who hosted the party, were lying in wait with best wishes. The hosts were Martha Leite, Stephen Nichols Jr., Patti Lima and Lisa Nichols. Oldies music played in the background while the family feasted on Italian cuisine and enjoyed a scrumptious, beautiful birthday cake festooned with chocolate sea shells. Judy thanks everyone. She loved her day and her memories of it.
Could it really be that Grace Church commences Friday night lobster rolls tonight from 4 to 7 p.m.? If you are a regular or a visitor, check out this Island tradition.
The last lecture in the Island history series will be held tomorrow, Saturday, May 2, from 1 to 4 p.m. at our local library. Guest speakers are civil engineer Kent Healy, who will discuss our water table and Tisbury Great Pond issues, along with June Manning, Aquinnah Wampanoag genealogist. The program is free and all are invited.
Zoologist Luanne Johnson will hold forth at the library on Tuesday night, May 5. The title? The Skunks Are Out and About...Now What? Luanne is not bringing any examples of her work, so feel free to come and ask questions. I’ll see you there at 7 p.m.
Youngsters may visit the library earlier that same day for Mother Goose On The Loose. These stories, songs and rhymes with Colleen begin at 10 a.m. for the infant to two-year-olds. The three-to-five set enjoy the show at 11 a.m.
Here’s a heads-up for Friday, May 8 from 3 to 5 p.m. when ages eight and older may enjoy a movie about a dog resort — can you guess? — and free popcorn in the program room at the library.
So you don’t overbook yourselves, please note that our talented high school Minnesingers are having a show at the Performing Arts Center on Saturday, May 9, at 8 p.m. and Sunday, May 10, at 4 p.m. Tickets are $10 at the door. Our condolences go out to Corley, Neal and Marilyn Maciel and their families on the death of Leona — Lee Maciel. She was a great mother, grandmother and friend to all. She will be sorely missed.
Anniversary bouquets go out to Andrew and Kathy Farrissey on May 6.
The birthday bandwagon pulls along Megan Stiller, Marina Natichioni, Barbara Murphy, Mary Muckerheide, Kirsten Klaussen, Lindsey Ben David and twin Ellie Williamson today. (Ellie’s twin, Andie, celebrated yesterday, that old midnight deadline.) May 4 is claimed by Anna Duarte and Jonathan Spencer Norton who becomes five! May 6 is a party for Jim MacDonald, Joey Murphy and Sarah Francis. And on May 7 Ellen Dubraska takes the cake. Many happy returns.
