The daffodils are leaning with the wind all over town now as the rain and sun of last week worked their magic. The prettiest display is always the large patch of daffodils in the corner of Louis and Mary Larsen’s yard at Beetlebung corner and they are blooming in profusion now.

I overheard a pleasant moment of reminiscence while waiting in line at Chilmark Chocolates this week. Margaret Maida spotted Ted Meinelt and told him how well she remembered making holiday crafts in his art class at the Tisbury School some years ago. Needless to say, Ted remembered it all very well. Many of his students still fondly recall those classes.

Bill Vincent and his daughter, Katie, came from Schenectady on Friday for a weekend at their home on South Road.

Chilmark artist Jacqueline Mendez-Diaz has a display of her artwork, oils and watercolors, at the Chilmark library for the rest of the month. Jackie tells us that her daughter, Alexandra, has received a Fulbright Award and will be going to Spain to work on a fictional biography that she plans to write.

Caleb and Chris Slater and their daughter, Celia, spent last weekend with us, Caleb’s parents, and we all enjoyed a busy few days of spring chores — mostly boat painting.

Ted and Judy Mayhew are home from their annual Florida vacation. They spent the month past on Sugarloaf Key which is 17 miles from Key West. While there, they had a visit with Ted’s cousins from Montana and with Ernest Cobb and Freda Peters who came from Rhode Island. Many Vineyard friends also visited them throughout the month.

Terry Meinelt has been making numerous weekend visits from Topsfield working on the completion and settling of his new home on South Road. He hopes the family can be in by summer.

The Martha’s Vineyard Chamber Music Society is about to begin their 39th season of summer concerts. Subscriptions and ticket order forms are available now at town libraries, or call Kathy Retmier at 508-696-8055 or Elaine Pace at 508-696-3796. The concerts will be held on Mondays at the Old Whaling Church and on Tuesdays at the Chilmark Community Center. Congratulations to the Chilmark Library, ranked number one in the state in per capita circulation. The Massachusetts Board of Library Commissioners annually releases these figures and this is the second year in a row that Chilmark has ranked first. They also ranked second in circulation per staff hour, which means they are the second, most productive and efficient library staff in the commonwealth. We knew that! Cheers to those hard working folks.
