Prudy Whiting reports that the absentee ballots for the annual town election have arrived, so if you are going to be out of town on election day you may cast your vote at the town hall during normal business hours until noon on April 13, or apply for an absentee ballot. Running for contested offices this year are Michael Colaneri incumbent and challenger Jonathan Revere for Board of Assessors, Jemima James and Tara Whiting for Town Clerk and Sarah Carr, Harvey Garneau, Melissa Hackney and Isaac Russell for two seats on the Library Trustees. Last Thursday, Martha’s Vineyard Museum staff members Amy Houghton, Anna Carringer and Dana Costanza Street drove down to Winterthur Museum and Country Estate in Winterthur, Delaware to attend the opening of Harbor & Home: Furniture of Southeastern Massachusetts, 1710-1850. The new exhibit features two pieces from the Museum’s object collections, an inlaid wooden box and a high chest of drawers. Our staffers were warmly welcomed by the Winterthur staff and were given a special tour of Winterthur’s 1000 acre property of rolling hills, exquisitely designed gardens, numerous dwellings and a series of galleries showcasing an outstanding collection of decorative arts. Winterthur was once the home of the DuPont family, who strove to create a self-contained community where they lived off the land and demanded perfection in every aspect of their lives.

April 3, 1965: “Chris Murphy and Allen Whiting, both students at Cornwall Academy in Great Barrington, arrived home last Saturday for a two week spring break recess. Chris will be celebrating his 19th birthday this weekend. His father, Stan, observed his birthday yesterday. He reported that when a person tells you their age they are said to ‘celebrate’ a birthday; when they won’t reveal ‘how much water has passed over the dam’ it is said that they ‘observed’ the occasion.”

Happy Birthday to: Kevin Peters, Jackie Flynn-Morgan and Laura Murphy today; Warren Mead, Holly Wayman and Ken Hurd tomorrow; Charles Deary, Arthur Marx and Larry Greenburg on Sunday; Andrew Nelson, Pat Fitzpatrick and Donna Paulock on Monday; Linda Gandel, Nancy Cole, Mary Keenan, Lori Ionnitiu and Robert Berosh on Tuesday, Joe Cataloni, Alison Barrett, Mickey Stone and Bob Woodruff on Wednesday and Joan Huston, Randi Sylvia and John Stanwood on Thursday.
