Once again, we will attempt to have a special town meeting on Tuesday evening, March 3 at 7 p.m. at the town hall. You are needed for a quorum, so please bring a neighbor and vote.

The Aquinnah Public Library has kept vacationing students busy for the week with weavings. Amanda Hutchinson is assisting with handcrafts of knitting and stitching on Tuesday evenings through March, board games on Tuesday afternoons and evenings, and a movie on Thursday evening during vacation. Saturday morning is story time at 11 for young children, and art time at 11:30. The library staff has had a wonderful collection of books about Abraham Lincoln displayed for the month of February and now ready to be read.

Coco Adams will host a flea market and bazaar at the Chilmark Community Center tomorrow from 9:30 a.m. to 3:30 p.m. to break up the monotony of this cold, windy, snowy winter we have endured. Please stop by and find many antiques, books, art, jewelry, furniture, wampum jewelry, handmade items, jams and jellies, Vineyard collectibles and more.

The Echo Performing Arts Festival will be held at the tribal building on Saturday evening, Feb. 28 at 5 p.m. with a potluck social and a performance following dinner. This is the annual tour of storytellers, dancers and a shared cultural event that includes the Aquinnah Wampanoag Tribe, the Peabody Essex Museum, the Alaskan Native Heritage Center and the Bishop Museum in Hawaii. Please bring a dish to share and enjoy the events of the evening.

For those fantastic fans of Philly D, aka Phil DaRosa, you may see him on March 1 at Che’s Lounge in Vineyard Haven. Phil will be heading out on a tour in a few weeks, but first will dazzle his Vineyard friends with his latest music.

Condolences to the family and many friends of Maxine Barritt who died this past week in Florida. Maxine and her family were longtime summer residents of East Pasture. She remained a close friend of the Manning family; Helen had resided with her while working in Boston and would often visit with her in Florida and kept up with all of her Vineyard friends through the Gazette. She will be greatly missed by many.

Jacob Antonio Bazzy will be eight years old today and will be celebrating by riding Jimmy SanFilippo’s horse Noble. Jacob is now part of the Rising Tide riding program — a fabulous program.

Aiyana Correira, three-year-old daughter of Sarah Moreis, recently attended an etiquette class at the Harbor View Hotel with her fellow students at Vineyard Montessori School. Toby Franklin, the Harbor View director of food and beverage, gave the children important lessons about posture, table manners, and other social tips while enjoying a special luncheon.

Our East Pasture friend and neighbor, producer Gary Foster, was delighted to have the publicity launching of his soon to be released movie The Soloist, which was initially nationally advertised during the Academy Awards on Sunday. Not only was it noted as an advertisement but also during the close of the evening program with the upcoming not-to-be missed movies of 2009. We will all be able to see The Soloist as it premiers across the country on April 24.

Lexie Roth is at her home in Aquinnah for a visit. She recently performed at Che’s Lounge and has been tooling around town in one of her father Arlen’s many antique autos.

We have had two new tribal members born this week, Brooklyn MV Lexie Ann Pepsi Peterson, daughter of Camille Carter and Uni Peterson, and granddaughter of Shelley Carter, was born at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Feb. 21. Brian Vanderhoop, son of Tiffany Vanderhoop, was born in British Columbia, the first grandchild of David Vanderhoop of Aquinnah and Evelyn Churchill Vanderhoop Wiley, and great-grandson of Anne Vanderhoop Madison.

Jesse Wiener has recently completed one production in Manhattan and on Monday he began a new stint as the music production assistant for Rock of Ages, which will be at the Brooks-Atkinson Theatre with a preview on March 17. Great job Jesse — keep up the good work.

Happy birthday wishes this week to Cameron Widdiss who will be eight on March 1. Jacqueline Mendez will party on March 2 and shares the day with Joanne Eccher. Penny Huff will observe a major milestone on March 3 and we will all wish her a happy one at town meeting on Tuesday.
