The leaves are starting to show their colors. There is a slight smell of woodstove smoke in the night air, the pumpkins are sitting on people’s doorsteps, and you know that in some kitchens there is the smell of apple pie. Happy fall.
Happy birthday to all who celebrated their day this past week. Big balloons go out to Kenon Veno who celebrated his day Oct. 11, Maggie Lindland, Oct. 12, Tayla Kuehne, Oct. 15, and to Kylie Estrella and Alexander Guest who celebrate their day today, Oct. 17.
At 4 p.m. on Sunday Nov. 2, Peter R. Boak will present an organ recital on the 1895 Hook and Hastings organ at the Federated Church meetinghouse, corner of South Summer street and Davis Lane in Edgartown. Peter is the church’s minister of music, the musical director of the Island Community Chorus, and vocal music teacher for the Tisbury School students in kindergarten through eighth grade.
The organ is due for restoration, so the admissions donations, which can be of any amount, will directly benefit the Steeple Fund Capital Campaign of the Federated Church, which includes monies for the organ. It also funds the restoration and preservation of the Federated’s three historic buildings: the 1828 meetinghouse, the parish house, and the Mayhew parsonage.
Those who come and enjoy this special recital will be able to appreciate not only the music but also the work that already has been completed on the buildings: re-siding the exteriors of the Meetinghouse and parish house, re-roofing of the parish house, painting of the interior of the meetinghouse. The re-done steeple was completed last year.
A wine and cheese reception will follow this extraordinary event.
Ernie Carlomagno, the nursery manager and specialist in custom bonsai at Donaroma’s has just returned from Rochester, N.Y., after being accepted to exhibit one of his bonsai trees at the first national bonsai exhibit in the United States.
Ernie has been preparing for this exhibition for months, as he perfected his tree with a snip here and there. He was one of 350 exhibitors to be invited, and when he arrived in New York the organizers accepted only 194 exhibits out of those 350. He said the trip was amazing and there were some beautiful bonsais. Congratulations, Ernie, we are all proud of you.
This is the time of year when I warn people there are men sitting in trees. Yes, bow season has begun. So if you are walking in or near the woods make sure you are whistling or talking loud enough for those to hear, and keep an orange ribbon on your dogs if they are with you.
It was great to see our neighbor Zack Waller home the past two weekends to do some fishing. He is loving Boston University and the classes, but the derby kept calling him home. Have a great week and keep the home candles burning.
