An 86-year-old Pennsylvania man parking his car along Circuit avenue in Oak Bluffs drove into the front of Mocha Mott’s coffee shop just before 3 p.m. on Monday. Although no one was seriously injured, the crash shattered the coffee shop’s plate glass window and clogged traffic for approximately 30 minutes.

Oak Bluffs Lieut. Timothy Williamson said Findley Haiman of Ardmore, Pa., was trying to park his 2003 Accura sedan when his car jumped the curb and smashed into the side of the building. Police believe Mr. Haiman may have been trying to hit the brakes when he mistakenly hit the gas.

The vehicle went over the curb and struck a metal staircase leading to the basement level coffee shop before coming to rest on the side of the building. The crash dislodged a building support beam, prompting the fire chief to request the building inspector to visit the site to examine it for structural damage.

Work crews were busy Monday afternoon installing temporary bracing to the building and replacing the plate glass window.

Although Mr. Haiman was not injured, an 82-year-old female passenger was treated for minor injuries at the scene and transported to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a precaution.

Lieutenant Williamson said it was fortunate there were no serious injuries.

“It could have been tragic if somebody was walking along the street at the time. The street is still busy at this time of year,” he said.

Police cited Mr. Haiman for failure to use caution while operating a motor vehicle.
