The Holmes Hole Sailing Association concluded its summer season of handicap sailboat racing from Vineyard Haven harbor with a Thursday night race on August 28 and two harbor races on August 31.

Thursday, August 28, was a beautiful late summer evening with a brisk 10-15 knot north wind. Nine boats posted for the start at red nun 6 outside of the Vineyard Haven harbor breakwater. The fleet sailed a triangle from nun 6 to nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23A at East Chop and back to the finish at nun 6. The first leg was a beat to windward. After rounding the red nun, the fleet sailed a beam reach on the port tack to the green can at East Chop. After rounding the can, the fleet sailed a broad reach on the starboard tack to the finish.

Finishing first was Jerry Goodale in his Pearson 31, Stormalong. In second was Sandy Alexander in Falcor. In third was Roger Becker in Gloria. Fourth was Mike Loberg in Masquerade, fifth was Robert Hale in Wicked, sixth was Art Spielvogel in Sea Wolf, seventh was Dan Culkin in Magic Time, eighth was Phil Hale in Mischief, and ninth was David Lott in Avanti.

On Sunday, August 31, the regular season concluded with two harbor races. Nine boats posted at red nun 6 for the 10:00 a.m. race on a sunny morning course from red nun 6 to red nun 4 at West Chop, then to green can 23A at East Chop, and back to the finish at nun 6. The course was sailed twice around.

In the A division, finishing first was Roger Becker in his C & C 24, Gloria. In second was Jerry Goodale in his Pearson 31, Stormalong. In third was Michael Loberg in his Morris 36, Masquerade. Fourth was John Amabile in Solitude and fifth was Phil Hale in Mischief.

In the B Division, first were Tom and Laurie Welch in the Vineyard Vixen, Eastaway. In second was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. In third was Alan Wilson in the Marshall Cat, High Tide. In fourth was David Lott in Avanti.

The 2 p.m. race the saw the cool and clearing northwest wind hold at 10-15 knots. Eleven boats posted for the start at red nun 6 where a course was set from the nun to green bell 23 near Oak Bluffs, then to buoy RW NW near East Chop, then to red bell 2 at West Chop, then to nun 4 at West Chop, and back to the finish.

In the A division, finishing first was Jerry Goodale in his Pearson 31, Stormalong. In second was Frank Satula in his J 28, Magic Twanger. In third was Michael Loberg in his Morris 36, Masquerade. Fourth was John Amabile in Solitude, and fifth was Phil Hale in Mischief.

In the B Division, first was Alan Wilson in the Marshall Cat, High Tide. In second were Tom and Laurie Welch in the Vineyard Vixen, Eastaway. In third was Dan Culkin in the Vineyard Vixen, Magic Time. Fourth was Sandy Alexander in Falcor, fifth were John And Lisa Stout in Isabella and sixth was David Lott in Avanti.
