Chilmark‘s summer buzz is over. Now the roads, beaches and shops are quiet and welcoming to the visitors who enjoy this time of year. The community center has closed, the Home Port will close this Sunday and the mail will no longer be delivered to the Menemsha Post Office. All signs of the approaching fall season. However, there are still many activities to keep us busy. Please make note of all the dates below.
Congratulations to Roland Shea who will celebrate his 85th birthday at his North Road home on Sept. 1. His son, Ray and wife, Cammie, will come from New Hampshire to join Gert in making it a special holiday for Roland. Cheers from us all!
Congratulations to all the winners of ribbons at the Agricultural Fair. Bob Ganz won first prize for the third year in a row for his display of home-produced vegetables and fruit. It was an appetizing basketful of foods.
Norman and Diana Freed’s grandchildren spent the month of August with them at their State Road home and managed to produce enough winning craft items to accumulate a third and three honorable mentions for Miriam, age 7 and a first, a third and an honorable mention for her brother, Jonah, age 7. Big sister Shoshana who is 9 won three firsts and a second. And, in collaboration, they won two more firsts. Good work! They are the children of Deborah Freed and Ian Boardman.
One more Agricultural Fair story ... Barrett Oliver, four years old, the son of Kevin and Elizabeth Oliver of Chilmark, entered a scarecrow in competition at the fair. He won a blue ribbon and when told, was very disappointed. He wanted a red ribbon as red is his favorite color. Sometimes winning means different things to different people!
Bob and Connie Taylor of North Road were happy to have an August visit from their daughter, Susie Parsons who came from Petaluma, Calif. with her sons, Kane, age 3 and Ronin, age 6 months. Ronin was born on Feb. 23 and enjoyed his first Vineyard visit. Mike Parsons joined his family for the last week of the vacation. The family travels back to California on Sept. 2.
Marsha Mason and her daughter, Stephanie Bouchard, hosted a surprise baby shower for Marsha’s daughter, Ashley Waters, of Vineyard Haven. Twenty or more of Ashley’s Island family and friends attended the party held at the Chilmark Church hall on August 23. Ashley’s grandmother, Dorothy Tripp, came from Somerset and Marsha traveled from Cherry Valley. Ashley’s mother in law, Violet Waters also attended the party.
Gretchen Feldman is having a show of her recent watercolors at the Carol Craven Gallery off Holmes Hole Road in Vineyard Haven.
The Rantoul and Turman families will spend three weeks of September at the family home on Middle Road. Tom Turman will have a showing of his ink drawings of the Vineyard at the Chilmark Library on Sept. 6 with the opening from 3 to 5 p.m. Tom and Beebo Turman’s daughter, Laurel, and her husband Brian Whyte, will be joining the family in Chilmark after receiving their master’s degrees in London.
Steve and Susan McGhee are looking forward to a visit this week from Steve’s son, Geoff and his friend Sara Tollefson who are coming from Paris. Geoff works for the newspaper Le Monde and will soon be leaving for an assignment in Moscow.
John Flender enjoyed a family reunion with visits from his brother Richard of New York and his sister Cindy Webber of Connecticut at his Tiasquam Road home.
Bob and Phyllis Conway have had consecutive family visits this month. Their daughter, Robin and husband, Tom Morley, came from Long Valley, N.J. and their daughter, Tara came from New York city. David Conway visited his parents for several days coming from Whippany, N.J. Bob’s sister, Nancy and her husband, Phil Bleser, came from Estling Lake, N.J. Robin and David renewed friendships made in earlier times while working for the community center, Home Port and Poole’s Fish market.
Chilmark resident Tim Lasker is running for the job of State Representative on the Democratic ticket in Massachusetts representing the Cape and Islands. His supporters are hosting an auction and potluck supper at the Parsonage at the Whiting Farm in West Tisbury on August 30 from 4 to 8 p.m. Many well-known Island artists are donating paintings for the auction and many well-known Island musicians will be performing. All are welcome.
The Bard is coming to The Yard! The Limón Dance Co., Broadway actor,André De Shields, and baritone, Mark Womack are all coming to The Yard this weekend for the Othello Project. The Yard performances are at their Barn theatre at Beetlebung Corner. There will be performances on Friday, Saturday and Sunday. Please call for details at 508 -645-9662. There will be a free family matinee on Sunday at 4 p.m. Friday’s opening night performance will be followed by a champagne reception.
Please remember to mark your calendars for Sept. 22, the night of the special town meeting at the Community Center at 7:30 p.m.
The Chilmark library returns to off-season hours on Sept. 2. There are no hours on Friday and half days on Tuesdays and Thursdays. There are no adult programs scheduled for the week ahead, however, the children’s programs continue.
Congratulations to Jane Naylor who has planted and maintained the beautiful butterfly garden in front of the Chilmark Library. She won a blue ribbon at the fair for flower arranging of flowers from the butterfly garden. We all thank her for her hours of volunteer gardening.
Congratulations to Eric Cottle who celebrated his 92nd birthday this week. Cheers from us all.
